An entire year of NHL hockey was lost in 2004-2005 due to the inability of the NHLPA and the NHL owners to work out a mutually-agreeable Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) for both sides.
The current CBA expires on September 15, 2012 and, if a new agreement is not in place by that date, the NHL will experience another lockout. This means fans of the NHL might have to endure another year without NHL hockey or, at the very least, a shortened season.
Gary Bettman, as NHL Commissioner, is ultimately responsible for whether or not this occurs. As Commissioner, his role is to broker mutually-agreeable terms for both sides in the CBA. Considering that the 2004-5 lockout occurred on his watch, and considering we are potentially faced with another lockout, he is starting to show that he is not able to do his job with a reasonable degree of success.
If the NHL endures another lockout, the undersigned respectfully requests that the NHL fire Mr. Bettman as Commissioner and appoint a new individual to the post.
