Peter Illyich Tchaikowsky is the beloved composer most widely known to have been homosexual and to have suffered for it in his lifetime. For America's leading opera house to open its season with one of his works, performed by a conductor and a leading soprano who support Putin's recent laws against homosexual people and those who support them dishonors the work of a great artist and his legacy as well as the progress made in our own country to secure equality for all citizens.

Dedicate 9/23 Opening Gala to support of LGTB people.

Sincerely,

Patricia Racette, Beth Clayton, and Joyce DiDonato have declared their support for LGBT people here and throughout the world, in light of the alarming legislation put in place by Vladimir Putin. And we now have 8010 signatures on our petition. Why is the MET so reluctant to take a positive stand when some of its most brilliant and popular artists, including director Bartlett Sher, courageously speaking out?

A request to dedicate Friday 9/6 San Francisco Opera opener with Patricia Racette in Boito's 'Mephistopheles' ? Gen Mgr Gockley's response: "
I thank you for your email and the request for the dedication of Friday night's opera performance.
Over the years we have received a number of similar requests, some to officially to embrace causes for which we individually have had great empathy. Yet, when it got down to it we have firmly taken the position that the mission of the company is the presentation of operatic performances and not about the political or moral conduct of sovereign nations, or taking public stands on issues in general. As an organization we have always embraced a workforce of individuals from all races, religions and sexual orientations.
We support your right to have an informational picket line and offer our help in facilitating it any way we can.
      Kind regards, David Gockley>>

"...it seems to me that the Met has two options here: dedicate its season opener to LGBT people in Russia, which would put Gergiev and Netrebko in an awkward position, or refuse to take a stand in support of persecuted LGBT people in Russia and risk an much more awkward demonstration on opening night. Petition Wants Met Gala Dedicated to Gay Rights

The furor over Russia's new law placing restrictions on the discussion of homosexuality has spread to the world of classical music, with some opera fans calling on the Metropolitan Opera to dedicate its opening-night gala performance of Tchaikovsky's "Eugene Onegin" to the support of gay people.

Valery Gergiev, with his bulging eyes, perma-stubble, and twitchy-hands-conducting-style (1), is bandied about as the most active musician on the classical circuit and the most conspicuous champion of Russian musical culture; he is also one of the highest paid (2) classical musicians in the world and is without a doubt the industry's most powerful persona.

Our petition stands now at 1767 Signatures. New features in online magazines and blogs are proliferating. And interview with Sveriges Radio is coming. A lengthy interview with a reporter from the NY TImes took place this afternoon. Attempts are being made to bring The Rachel Maddow Show into our cause. Do not be discouraged by the Met's calculatedly aloof response.

      (Charles) Andrew Rudin
      Petition Organizer

"The Met is proud of its history as a creative base for LGBT singers, conductors, directors, designers, and choreographers. We also stand behind all of our artists, regardless of whether or not they wish to publicly express their personal political opinions. As an institution, the Met deplores the suppression of equal rights here or abroad. But since our mission is artistic, it is not appropriate for our performances to be used by us for political purposes, no matter how noble or right the cause."

Tchaikovsky is the most important Russian composer whose works are widely played and widely admired. HIs sufferings as a homosexual in czarist Russia are as nothing compared to the sufferings of LBGTQ people under the punitive laws of Putin. Your leading star Ms. Netrebko and your leading guest conductor Mr. Gergiev support these laws. The least you can do is to dedicate the opening performance of your 2014-2015 season in support of the LBGTQ people who populate your audience, run your theater and work as stage hands and publicists.
