On April 29, TLC will premiere an American version of the British tv show, My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding. This program presents falsified, exaggerated representations of Irish Traveller behavior and lifestyles. It creates and perpetuates damaging stereotypes of both the Travellers and other Walking People like the Rroma. Tell TLC to end the spread of this offensive, marginalizing misinformation!

Just the word GYPSY is insulting, and I'd have to agree, after watching the english show, it does NOT portray us in a way that would earn our heritage any respect at all. It makes it worse. The Roma people have also been respected, educated, and sought-after.....for their gifts, that actually exist. And....believe it or not, even a hundred years ago, some lived in HOMES, and were productive members of their community. These shows are comparable to Jerry Springer, they wouldn't be popular if it wasn't SHOCKING behavior. There should be a show that accentuates the positives....

It is disgusting in this day and age that the media feels compelled to promote such racist, harmful, and falsified stereotypes of the Walking People mocked in shows like My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding. Furthermore, the word "gypsy" is a racial slur, used to justify centuries of hate crimes against Walking People while simultaneously hypersexualizing and fetishizing them. Please stop perpetuating such a perverse conceptualization of Walking People, who deserve infinitely better than this. It's bad enough that the UK version exists - why exacerbate the problem by expanding it to the United States?

Promoting stereotypes and bigotry is wrong. Using pejoratives like "gypsy" is wrong. I can't believe that, in 2012, people actually have to petition against this kind of hateful, ignorant nonsense.

I'm sick of seeing Walking People stereotyped. The amount of messages I've seen regarding this show and the UK version that are horrible is overwhelming. One said "They're like the white trash of the UK, and there are AMERICAN GYPSIES!"

It perpetuates damaging stereotypes, promotes use of the word "gypsy" which is offensive to many Walking people, and it presents all Walking People as a monolithic culture, rather than the myriad individual cultures that exist under the umbrella term Walking People.
