end 'turnaround' schemes that privatize public schools

      Chicago, IL

The CPS School Board voted to hand over neighborhood public schools – including Piccolo and Casals Elementary on Chicago's west side--to politically connected private agency, AUSL. CPS claims the schools have failed and want to do a Turnaround- fire teachers and staff- but school officials have DENIED their role in underfunding and mismanaging these schools for more than five years. IL Parents continue their protest and state legislators have responded with bills that would put a hold on Turnarounds and school closures for a year while making CPS work with the school community on clear plans for school improvement and accountability. We the undersigned support HB4487,  SB3239 and the larger effort to stop handing our schools over to private agencies.

Many of our Chicago Public Schools are struggling, but I do not believe the privitization of these schools is the solution. Income, or rather, lack of it, is the greatest predictor to a child's future success. Studies show turnarounds are not the success in which they are touted to be. Our limited resources should be allocated towards a holistic approach, meeting not only the educational, but also the social, mental, physical and emotional needs of our children in their neighborhood PUBLIC school.

Stop privatizing what is public. The parking meters are enough. Children are not commodities. Their lives and futures can not be traded to the highest bidder. Profiting from chidlren's futures is unconscionable.

Our teachers are not failing our students its CPS @ 125 S. Clark Street doing that. students are at these schools to learn what our teachers want to teach, but instead CPS has these Networks ran by losers who love to be used as puppets with a group of retards designing these projects and forcing teachers to teach that, and now there making our students test test test test test test test test, I know because i drive over to pick the test up at these networks. i support the HB4487 and SB3239 bills. we need to oust Rham Emanuel, and his sweetcheeks (Brizard) and we need to do a "TURN AROUND" on 125 S. Clark Street.

I fully support SB3239 and HB4487 and ask for a moratorium on all school closings and turnarounds.

Reading the SunTimes today I see that Harvard Elementary School made the 2011 Illinois Honor Roll when they did NOT make AYP and only 65% of their students Met or Exceeded State Standards while at the same time Casals Elementary School is being turned around with 62% of their students Meeting or Exceeding State Standards.

Does anyone else see the discrepancy?

It is time for Chicago to elect the Chicago Board of Education Members and stop the cronyism that results from appointing board members.

We need to send a strong message to Rham Emanuel: stop underfunding and mismanaging our neighborhood schools so you can sell them off to the highest bidder. Keep neighborhood schools public!
