Reopen Internet Sweepstakes Cafes in Cuyahoga County, OH

    2. Petition by

Internet sweepstakes cafes should be allowed to remain open for the following reasons:

1. They Create Jobs - In the state of Ohio, as in all other states, there is a need to create jobs. Jobs are being created by the small business man and woman. In 2006, an article in Businessweek showed that 82.9% of U.S. employment was in businesses with less than 500 employees.
2. They Generate Tax Revenue - Each Internet sweepstakes cafe pays taxes. Each employee of an Internet sweepstakes cafe pays taxes. Every time an employee of an Internet sweepstakes cafe spends money earned at their job, sales tax revenue is generated.
3. They Build A Sense of Community - As a culture of regular customers become familiar and friendly with each other, they begin to schedule their social lives around meeting at Internet sweepstakes cafes. We take pride in the fact that Internet sweepstakes cafes fill a need that is missing from the lives of some of our customers.

The Government continues to take away simple freedoms, it is just not right and completely against the principles our country was based on.

As a longtime customer of internet sweepstakes, and cafes, let me begin by stating that these games are for amusement, and entertainment. As a responsible internet sweepstakes operator/attendant, I’d like to point out that not all cafes/business centers are the same. We here at South Main Biz Center provide a clean, relaxing, and over-all enjoyable atmosphere. The staff is courteous, respectful, and genuine, and we strive to keep an open, friendly environment. We refer to our customers by name, and are happy to provide an alternative and comfortable facility, even offering a variety of free beverages, and snacks.

There are very few places in a smaller town, such as Graham, to simply sit back in your chair, and access the internet for games, social networking, or shopping, and as an added bonus, we provide you with entries to our sweepstakes games. My first experience in an internet café, similar to the facility I now work in, was refreshing and different. As many of your readers, I was under the impression that business centers and sweepstakes games were nasty little cramped buildings, filled with miserable people ‘gambling’ their lives away. This is a grossly inaccurate portrayal of your average business center.

The truth is that the actual ‘sweepstakes’ portion of an internet café is only a partial reason that so many people, from various walks of life, are attracted to places such as South Main Biz Center. What we truly provide, and where the real appeal stems from, is social interaction for those that otherwise would have little or no involvement outside the home. For many of my customers, this is the only place where they can experience conversation and companionship. I consider my customers acquaintances, and spend much of my time at work simply socializing with people. Some people simply enjoy having a place to unwind and relax after work, and since we are one of the very few places even open when they do end their shift, our business center is the perfect place to decompress. Speaking of work, we also provide jobs to local people, and help to stimulate the local economy by buying many of our supplies here in Alamance County.

Though we have received a lot of “bad press” lately, I’d just like to point out that not all sweepstakes are as horrible as some people believe. While there are some places that tend to promote the stereo types that are often proliferated, we chose instead to bring the positive aspects of internet cafes and business centers to light. As one of my regular customers stated, if we are going to outlaw something that many people enjoy responsibly because of a few irresponsible people, we may as well close all bars and ABC stores, as well as restaurants. The average customer spends the same amount on internet time at an internet café as they would on a meal at a restaurant, or on a bar tab. In return for their hard earned money, they receive a respite from stress (one customer even refers to her visits to my business center as her “mini vacation” from the stress of her daily life), pleasant social interaction on many levels, in a clean well maintained environment, and access to one of the greatest sources of information available. Sounds like a great deal to me.
