Apologize for releasing Ramil Safarov to Azerbaijan

BUDAPEST, HUNGARY February 19, 2004. Armenian citizen Gurgen Margaryan, 26 years old, was hacked to death while asleep by Ramil Safarov, a Lieutenant of the Azerbaijani Army. Both were participants of an English language training course within the framework of the NATO-sponsored “Partnership for Peace” program held in Budapest, Hungary. The murder occurred at 5 o'clock in the morning, while the victim was asleep.

Even though Safarov confessed to the killing, and was sentenced to a life term in Hungary, in the past few days the government of Hungary released him to the government of Azerbaijan, and once that event took place, the corrupt president of Azerbaijan, Aliyev, pardoned him, and he returned with a hero's welcome.

This event took place under the umbrella of a NATO event, and it sets a very disturbing precedent where someone who's killed in his sleep at 5 am in the morning with an axe, can see no justice.

P.S.

1)

This entry from a recent petitioner caught my attention, and I woud like to disclose it:

"I am a proud Armenian and I don't just want an apology. I want the prime minister to step down from his seat, I want Hungary to recognize the Armenian Genocide and I want Hungary to acknowledge Karabagh as independent and Armenian!:"

2)

I think we should refrain from burning the Hungarian flag, and taking this out on the Hungarian people.  They are not responsible for this act, and surely will correct the mistake they made by electing the officials who did this.

3)

What Azerbaijan did was end all ability to tell the world they will give Artsakh the "Highest level of autonomy".  We saw what they did with Gurgan Margaryan's autonomy in Hungary.

Please continue your actions, and thank your for signing the petition.

Murderers should not be rewarded for their heinous acts. Governments should act with maturity and responsibility. Safarov (whose name sounds strangely Armenian to me) sinned against God and mankind, and the Azeri government showed the world they will break their promises and reward criminals. Shame on them both.

Barbarian act is never acceptable in humanity. Azerbaijan and Hungary should think again.

Justice must be seen to be done and the action of the Azeri President is out of order and unacceptable.
