The Fargo Forum has decided to publish ALL legal marriages! Through petitioning, writing in to the Forum, protesting, social media, and hard work, WE DID IT!

Marriage is about celebrating the love and commitment between two people. Part of celebrating that love is announcing it to friends, family, neighbors, and the world. Why try to squash a relationship when half the heterosexual marriages end in divorce? Why are we so intent on being able to allow free speech to those who hate and promote war, yet not allow that same free speech for people who want to celebrate and be happy? Gay couples don't insist on straight couples celebrating their relationships "behind the scenes," where they can't see us. Why are we not allowing them the same courtesy?

I have posted this on the Forums facebook page, and I wanted all of you guys to read it as well, so you are all up to date:

      To Whom It May Concern:

This petition was started to show support for Allison and Kelsey, and I want to make sure all of the voices are heard. We have banded together from many different regions around the country (and around the world) to show the Forum that it's policies are outdated and hurtful. It's time to join the rest of the world in realizing that love is more important than hate and discrimination. As so many people on the petition have said, LOVE IS LOVE. It should be recognized. It should be celebrated.

I ask the Forum to read through the comments and through the signatures and see all of the support pouring out of our community. Please make the right decision in your review of the policy in question.

      Thank you for your time,

      Renae Nelson

Although I deeply appreciate your efforts, this is NOT joyous news. Being that ND has a DOMA law, out of state same-gender marriages aren't recognized, so the reliance on the Century Code is illogical- not that any of this has to do with logic. Many loving same-gender couples do not have the means to travel out of state, away from their friends and family, to retrieve a legal document that is not otherwise recognized in ND, in order to have their announcement printed in the paper. It is disheartening to see yet another way loving couples are de-legitimized. Last summer, I stood in the front of my church, pews filled with friends and familiy, as my pastor married my partner and I. But that is not legitimate enough to deserve an announcement in my community paper. Both the Duluth and Grand forks papers, who are both published by Forum Comm, print same-gender wedding announcments, but Fargo still says no. I am cancelling my subscription to the Forum.

I wish your announcments to those who signed the petition addressed how problematic Matt Von Pinnon's stance continues to be. This is great for Allison and Kelsey, but does nothing for most of the same-gender couples in Fargo-Moorhead. A change that could happen if the Forum editor made the right choice. But he didn't.

Gays are people & in this country we are supposed to all have equal rights. A homophobe is no better than a racist or pitt bull discrimination. Ignorance, arrogance and discrimination should lose to love & acceptance, every time.
