The Congress of the United States

Pass the Respect for Marriage Act

    1. Petition by

      Timothy Williams

      Athens, NY

Since the United States was founded we have fought injustices in our country and around the world. Whether it was the passing of the 13th and 14th Amendments and the Civil Rights Act, America has tried to right is wrongs. Today however same-sex couples are not given the same rights as heterosexual couples. The Respect for Marriage Act when passed will give same-sex couples the same benefits as heterosexual couples and repeal the Defense of Marriage Act of 1996 which defined marriage as one man and one woman. The Defense of Marriage Act or DOMA is unconstitutional under the 14th Amendment's Equal Protection Clause which says no law should exclude other citizens from the same jurisdiction of the law.

I believe that if someone loves another of the same gender, then it should be legal to marry them, instead of not being allowed to do so.

I believe that all citizens of this country and world for that matter should marry who they want.
