Victory

From: Dana Lacroix: I started this petition thinking I would target 2500 signatures, then I was told the Canadian gov. wouldn't even consider anything less than 10,000! Well it sounded like a huge mountain to climb but with the help of a lot of caring, compassionate people, we have done it and more! Congratulations and Thank You so much!

Horses from Canada and the US are enduring incredible suffering as you read this. They are being packed into trucks and hauled, sometimes very long distances to one of 4 federally run slaughter plants in Canada, designed for killing cattle, not horses. They are often gravely injured, at times even dead upon arrival, and due to their flight nature, the suffering and terror continues for these poor souls up until the very end which is all too frequently prolonged and so dangerous that even inspectors do not want to be present for fear of injury.Horses are extremely sensitive animals, are aware of danger and in a state of panic they thrash about and move their heads away from the workers, making a clean kill practically impossible. There is overwhelming evidence in the form of both video and witness accounts to verify that horse slaughter is indeed cruel and inhumane. Horses are not food animals, however many people are under the misconception that slaughtering horses is no different than slaughtering cattle and pigs. The treatment and slaughtering of food animals is definitely in need of reform and changes as well, but the cruelty and suffering does not compare to what horses endure--these are mostly animals that have shared their lives with people. They are companion animals, working, entertainment and pleasure riding horses.. and then there are the wild horses--Yes wild horses--something our country should treasure and be proud of, but instead our government is sponsoring round ups of these magnificent creatures and dooming them to an imprisoned and torturous end! The horses waiting in slaughter stockyards, often in horrendous conditions are of all breeds and ages, from the very young, the pregnant, the old--even ponies, donkeys and burros. Also, most domestic horses have medication in their bloodstream that is banned in animals slaughtered for food--this is not being monitored because if it was most of these horses would not be approved for slaughter. This is Canada's dirty little secret - and the Conservative government seems quite happy to keep it that way. They are not listening!! We want to let our Government know that Canadians care about our horses --this country was built with horses and it is an outrage to mistreat them like this--they deserve so much better. Please sign and urge the Canadian Government to end horse slaughter and adopt bill C-322.

There are people joining our ranks every day--doing what they can--a little or a lot, it all counts. There are still so many people who have no idea of the incredibly inhumane conditions our horses from the US and Canada are suffering through every day. A lot of people are still under the impression that horse slaughter is a humane acceptable end of life for unwanted horses. We know that this is far removed from the truth and we need to expose this deceitful, cruel, money-hungry abusive "business" for what it is--a crime against nature and the moral fibre that binds compassionate humans together! Please Please don't give up on these wonderful animals who have benefited man so tremendously over the centuries and continue to thrill us with their beauty and talent.Together lets bring an end to this horrible betrayal forever. There was a protest rally in Calgary Alberta yesterday near the newly erected "Stop Slaughtering Us" billboard. Media coverage and 2 opinion polls have resulted.

On May 31, 2012, two slaughterhouses, Bouvry Exports in Fort Macleod, Alberta, and Viandes Richelieu in Massueville, Quebec, will no longer be accepting Thoroughbreds: http://www.drf.com/news/canadian-slaughterhouse-firm-no-longer-accepting-thoroughbreds. Thoroughbreds account for approximately 14% of the horses slaughtered in Canada yearly-mostly young athletic healthy animals that could have a promising future off the racetrack. The reasoning behind this latest move? Perhaps our message of tainted horse meat due to banned substances in the meat is being heard, and the implications of horse meat being linked to dangerous health consequences in humans, is making the government uneasy. True, most race horses are given drugs banned in meat animals, however if you ask any horse owner, most have the same medications in their own stable, so banning Thoroughbreds from slaughter is not going to fix this problem. The only real solution is to end horse slaughter altogether.

Horses are suffering and dying every day-it is so heartbreaking to think of what they are enduring--these wonderful creatures who have given mankind so much. We built our world with them -- and in this age of technology and motor vehicles, so many people have never experienced the amazing horse/human bond. For those of us who are lucky enough to have shared our lives with horses, this horrible situation is like a knife to our own hearts. Once you have known a horse, felt his heart and his warmth, his strength and his beauty...your soul is forever changed. Fight for them, with all you have, and never give up-- the same way that horse would run for you and not stop until he dropped. Please share this petition and lets get the support numbers rising so we can stop the insanity of slaughtering our long time companions.

I know there are a million people out there, and more, who would sign this petition in a heartbeat if they only knew the truth about horse slaughter--so many people are mis-led about what is going on and many do not even realize that close to 100,000 from the US and Canada are brutally slaughtered in Canada every year! Many of these poor souls have served humans in various ways during their lifetime. They were never bred or raised for meat and to think of them being suddenly thrown into a terrifying world of cruelty at the hands of strangers who only see them as nothing more than dollars per pound, is absolutely sickening. Then there are the babies-mostly castoffs from the pharmaceutical industry- never even given a chance . Wild horses, a treasure to those of us who know how unique and irreplaceable they are. All of these amazing sensitive beings are being caught up in a hellish environment driven by greed, + held in place with lies and deceit. Please help stop their suffering .

I love this comment by a US citizen—it really speaks the truth....
We breed to win.... we slaughter and then we ship them to Canada and Mexico. It is the American way. It's called "greed" the monster that lives in the hearts of little men. It is that greed that has brought this country to its knees and put us in the category of third world. We let them in and we are on sale and so are our horses, and they slaughter and laugh. In this depression we are on our knees like our horses when they are slaughtered . We will be accountable, it is a permanent record.

Thanks to support from Angel Acres in the US and the hard work of some very dedicated Canadians, plus donations from many of you compassionate, wonderful people, funds have been raised to erect the first ever anti horse slaughter billboard in Canada! This is exciting as it will be very visable to thousands of people and be a great asset in raising awareness. Thank you so much to everyone who contributed. It is things like this, with everyone coming together and each giving a little, that help change the world. We are determined to make life safer for horses.Stay strong, share the information, and be informed !

We are gathering more and more support for this cause everyday. In a recent research poll, ASPCA has determined that 80% of Americans oppose horse slaughter! That means there are many more people who need to sign petitions and speak out in both Canada and the US, so the governments hear us loud and clear! Angel Acres of the US has gathered enough funds from supporters to have several anti horse slaughter billboards put up in the US-alerting citizens about this brutal preditory injustice against our horses. We are now working on getting our first billboard up in Canada, with the help of Angel Acres. This is a great way to raise awareness -if everyone gives just a little it will go a long ways! Please chip in with Pay Pal--see link below.

Some figures were revealed in the last few days. Our Canadian government is profiting about 110,000,000.00 per year on this inhumane slaughter of horses--no wonder they don't want to pull their heads out of the sand and admit there is something terribly wrong with this whole situation! Please keep up the pressure/ keep sharing the truth--don't listen to those who say"well, what are we gonna do with all the unwanted horses?' or " we kill cows and pigs, so what's the difference"--these people do not know the facts. In short,The slaughter "industry" is fueling the unwanted horse population and allowing irresponsible breeding. Horses differ greatly from animals actually raised for food-their nature of panic and flight, plus their build with long necks, make humane slaughter virtually impossible-the horrific and common infractions happeningduring slaughter should be cause for criminal charges and immediate plant closure, but our government is getting away with unspeakable animal cruelty!

Online petition can be very effective for spreading information and gaining support for a cause globally, which is why I started this petition. I know there are thousands and thousands of people out there who are compassionate and when the truth of the cruel brutality of horse slaughter is revealed to them, they will sign a petition to stop it. Even though online petitions are not legally acceptable in Canadian parliament. the proof of thousands of supporters to any cause cannot be totally ignored, and will have impact. There are other ways you can help--paper petitions are legally valid in Canadian Parliament - you can download them online , find mailing addresses for petitions and letters to MPs and other important information on this issue ...here... http://www.defendhorsescanada.org/
Please do whatever you can. Thank-You. Dana

Good letter--this whole problem of too many horses falls on the shoulders of irresponsible humans--the horses, mostly healthy, often young and full of potential, are suffering a horrible end because there are not enough people speaking up to stop it, and our government plus the uncaring breeders are making a blood profit, trying to hide the truth and keep the public pacified with stories of humane rules and regulations. It is all a sham people!! This has got to end. Please do not be complacent while these horses suffer every minute of every day--it is a heart wrenching situation and we must not waver in our commitment to uncover the truth/alert all the caring people in Canada and the US so that they will join forces and demand an end to horse slaughter! Voice your opposition somehow--on a paper petition, or by writing/ phoning your MP-don't be discouraged by reassurance that all is well-the MPs need to wake up and stop believing false rhetoric from Conservatives who are profiting.

Lets keep the number rising--I know there are literally tens of thousands of people who would raise their voice to protect our horses from the horrors they are suffering here in Canada--we just need to tell them what is going on. Keep sharing as much information as possible. The Canadian government seems to think they can ignore us--lets amp up the volume so they will have no choice but to listen and wake up!! The fact that my Canadian government can callously condone such cruelty towards any living creature makes me ashamed and angry. The fact that one of these houses of horror slaughterhouses just received a substantial government grant - our Canadian tax dollars at work-makes me sick to my stomach.
The horses desperately need our help--I will not stop until the cruelty of slaughter ends and I pray you are steadfast by our side.Thank you!

Do not listen to the government rhetoric about how new rules are being implemented to make horse slaughter "less cruel" --even with all the bureaucratic blah blah about how things are improving, another undercover video from a government sanctioned slaughter house in Quebec, shows shocking footage that proves conditions for our poor horses are not better, in fact , it could be said they have deteriorated even more- it is inhumane beyond belief--how can this happen in Canada? If every Canadian witnessed this footage, there would be a deafening outcry. The SPCA has spoken up about it and condemns the conditions and treatment of the horses, stating that horse slaughter should be suspended
      immediately!! Please keep informing everyone!!

    25. We are 11 signatures away from 1500, so lets get over the hill! Thanks!

I just had a long conversation with a horse owner who did not want to sign my paper petition. Her stance was " If we stop slaughter what will happen to all the unwanted horses--there is nothing worse than seeing a horse starve to death" A valid point , however, what is the logic of solving a problem that begins with breeders and owners, in allowing them to grossly over-breed and then be totally irresponsible when it comes to the well being of the lives they have created? We have to get rid of this throw away mentality! We have an overpopulation of dogs and cats, but we do not slaughter them in Canada or the US! We deal with the problem, and come up with solutions that are ethical and show respect for the welfare of other beings. Horse slaughter is not humane, not even close and there are dozens of horse experts and veterinarians that will attest to that fact. The only reason it continues is because Our government is making money --blood money.

This is clearly profiting on the backs of helpless sentient beings. We don\t NEED horsemeat but now it is becoming a fashionable gourmet meat in high end restaurants as well as exported for PROFIT. People are making money from this dirty business and have no wish to change a thing from the barbaric methods they choose to kill. Don't make us ashamed to be Canadians by allowing this outrage to continue to be done within our country. We have a reputation for standing up for the underdog, and CRUELTY in any form, be it human or animal, should NEVER be legal.

Although I abhor the idea of horses being killed for meat, the number one reason I am against their slaughter is because the process is being done in a manner where they do not die immediately but suffer unbelievable agony. See the British Columbia SPCA undercover films of the insides of such slaughterhouses.
