Appointed to the position of Music Director starting fall, 2011, Arild Remmereit has invigorated audiences and reached out to the Rochester community to build new levels of involvement. It would seem that he has done the job he was hired to do, yet he has not received the support he needs from the Board or from the administration at the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, creating a hostile work environment for Remmereit. And as of 11-28-2012, the Board announced that Remmereit's contract would be terminated prematurely. We, as supporters, fans, and audience members of the RPO feel that Remmereit clearly deserves the support of the Board and administrators so that the RPO can continue in its mission of bringing an exciting range of music to enthusiastic audiences.

Elizabeth F. Rice, Chair, The Board of Directors of the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra
Charles H. Owens, President & CEO
Reinstate Music Director Arild Remmereit and give him respect and support.

Sincerely,

I have been attending RPO concerts since my student days at the U of R in the early sixties. Some years have been great, some not so much. However, I was thrilled from my first concert under new director Arild Remmereit. His goals to appeal to new audiences such as African-Americans and Hispanics and to include works by female composers at each concert as well as his enthusiastic and energetic conducting style was exciting! I understand working with very talented personnel can sometimes be difficult but that is what separates great leaders from egotistical failures like Charles Owens. I will no longer support the RPO.

I went on tour with Maestro Remmereit and the National Arts Center Orchestra in November. It was a memorable experience. He is very musical, very well organized, competent in all things, friendly and easy to work with. I wish him nothing but the best.

I have no firsthand knowledge of the nature of the dispute. But it makes sense to me that the Board should suck it up happily if, indeed, an excellent and iconoclastic Music Director makes (some of them) uncomfortable, while enjoying tremendous approval from audiences and from a significant number of musicians. My impression is that a Charles Owens is likely eminently replaceable, while dropping an artistically temperamented Arild Remmereit over personality conflicts is just plain selfish and stupid on the part of fearful and power-hungry Board Members. I have never bought RPO tickets because of who is Board Chairman, but very much have done so because of the person who is conducting! My sense is that the Board needs to set their own childish egos and recalcitrance aside for the sake of the music.

ever since Remmereit started ,I have truly enjoyed and am considering supporting with donations. Previously I had thought the RPO not that interesting.
