Victory

On March 6th, Bettina Seigel started a Change.org petition asking USDA to stop the use of LFTB in ground beef destined for school food. A mere nine days into the petition (when it reached over 200,000 signatures), USDA announced that starting in the fall of 2012 it will offer school districts a choice of beef either with LFTB or without the filler.

"Pink slime" is the term used for a mixture of beef scraps and connective tissue (formerly used only for pet food and rendering) that is treated with ammonia hydroxide to remove pathogens like salmonella and E coli. These so-called "Lean Beef Trimmings," are produced by Beef Products, Inc.

Two former government microbiologists claim that, for political reasons, pink slime was approved for human consumption by USDA over serious safety concerns.  (http://bit.ly/waMMni)

Government and industry records obtained by The New York Times in 2009 showed that "in testing for the school lunch program, E. coli and salmonella pathogens have been found dozens of times in Beef Products meat, challenging claims by the company and the U.S.D.A. about the effectiveness of the treatment. Since 2005, E. coli has been found 3 times and salmonella 48 times, including back-to-back incidents in August in which two 27,000-pound batches were found to be contaminated. The meat was caught before reaching lunch-rooms trays."

Even apart from safety concerns, it is simply wrong to feed our children connective tissues and beef scraps that were, in the past, destined for use in pet food and rendering and were not considered fit for human consumption.

Due to public outcry, fast food giants like McDonald's and Burger King have stopped using pink slime in their food.  But the federal government continues to allow its use in school food and has just authorized the purchase of ground beef which collectively contains an additional 7 million pounds of pink slime for consumption by our nation's children.

Tell the USDA to STOP the use of ground beef containing pink slime in the National School Lunch Program!

      Dear Supporters:
Only three weeks after launching my Change.org petition asking the U.S. Department of Agriculture to stop the use of so-called “pink slime” (or lean, finely textured beef – “LFTB”) in ground beef destined for school food, we’ve seen...

Pink slime -- that ammonia-treated meat in a bright Pepto-bismol shade -- may have been rejected by fast food joints like McDonald's, Taco Bell and Burger King, but is being brought in by the tons for the nation's school lunch program.

Back in July, 2010 I wrote a post entitled “One Burger, Please, Extra Ammonia and Hold the E Coli” which described the now well-publicized beef product known as “pink slime.” The substance is produced by Beef Products, Inc., a beef processing plant in South Dakota. BPI injects a mixture of cooking oil and fatty beef trimmings (formerly used for pet food) with ammonia in an attempt to remove E. coli and salmonella.

Prompted by The Daily’s reporting on the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s decision to purchase ground beef for the national school lunch program that contains “pink slime,” one Texas mother has started an online petition to ban the ammonia-treated ground beef from cafeterias.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s continued purchase of so-called pink slime for school lunches makes no sense, according to two former microbiologists at the Food Safety Inspection Service.

“I have a 2-year-old son,” microbiologist Gerald Zirnstein told The Daily. “And you better believe I don’t want him eating pink slime when he starts going to school.”

A while back, there was a tv show about a British chef (so sorry, I forgot his name, but it wasn't Gordon Ramsey!) trying to convince the Los Angeles School system to clean up their school lunch program. He was barred from going onto any school grounds, so he ran a workshop in a local storefront, invited parents and kids, and showed them how pink slime is made. It was a real eye opener for sure, and I'm sick and tired of all the BS "legislation" that goes on in America! These are our nation's future leaders, and we're feeding them crap that's been banned in other countries from being in school lunches for years!!! How does this even make sense?? That, along with just about any other bill that has to do with how safe our nation's food is (or isn't!) must make us a laughingstock to the rest of the world! Congress needs to SERIOUSLY rethink their positions and DO THE RIGHT THING!! And do it NOW!
