Tell the Senate: Follow House's Lead and Expand Access to Charter Schools

    1. Sponsored by

      StudentsFirst

In an overwhelmingly bipartisan vote, the House of Representatives recently approved legislation that would dramatically expand the number of high-quality educational choices available to families.

The Empowering Parents Through Charter Schools Act makes it easier for states to replicate successful charter schools; encourages public charters and traditional public schools to work and innovate together; and incentivizes charter schools to reach special student populations, such as at-risk children.

In other words, this legislation will help great educators learn from one another to improve education for all students.

At StudentsFirst, we believe that public charter schools are an important tool in closing the achievement gap between groups of students. Charter schools offer parents and students a choice when their traditional neighborhood school is not a viable option.

In addition to increasing the educational opportunities available to children, charters can harness their autonomy and entrepreneurial approach to spur innovation and create a space in which teachers can grow and develop instructional techniques that truly elevate the profession.

This legislation is an important step toward improving access to a quality education for all children.

Take action today and tell your senators to follow the House of Representative's lead -- pass the Empowering Parents Through Charter Schools Act immediately.

I'm writing to urge you to support the Empowering Parents Through Charter Schools Act, a bill that recently passed the House of Representatives in an overwhelmingly bipartisan vote.

The Empowering Parents Through Charter Schools Act would dramatically expand the number of high-quality educational choices available to families. Public charter schools are an important tool in closing the achievement gap between groups of students.

Importantly, the House retained provisions requiring charter schools, like all public schools, to disaggregate their student data. This critical element enables educators and families to track success and see where improvement is needed and enables policymakers and parents to hold schools accountable for educating all students.

This legislation is an important step toward improving access to a quality education for all children.

Support the Empowering Parents Through Charter Schools Act and send it to the President's desk for his signature.

I live in the South Bronx, NYC - our citywide school system is a failure in general - yes there are a few good, even great schools scattered thru the system, but not enough to sustain our 1.2 million students. I am a parent of a charter school scholar and it has been the most amazing experience for not only my son, but for my family as a whole. Allowing the successful charter networks ( ie KIPP, Success Charter Network, Uncommon, etc) to expand and teach other schools what they are doing to help our children cannot be negative in anyway - it is time to stop stepping all over our children and lift them up to the education that they have a right to.
