Tell the Halton Catholic District School Board: Recognize Gay-Straight Alliances

Ontario's Ministry of Education promotes the idea of Gay-Straight Alliances in Canadian schools. The Ministry encourages GSAs as a tool to fight homophobia. It also recognizes the impact that a GSA can have in building bridges between all students. And yet, despite this, one Catholic School Board just isn't buying it. Welcome to Halton Region!

The Halton Catholic District School Board (HCDSB) has previously banned GSAs in their schools. Several board members believe they are harmful, with board members even comparing gay-straight alliances to Nazi groups or sex clubs.

According to its website, the school board serves 29,000 students in a variety of suburbs - Milton, Halton Hills, Burlington, Oakville. And none of those students are taught tolerance.

Indeed, a new policy by the Halton Catholic District School Board only allows for student groups to form to discuss broad "equity" principles, and these groups cannot have the word "gay" in their title. The policy has led one school board member to say: "I’m really worried we went from revoking a ban on GSAs to banning the word 'gay.'"

Send the Halton Catholic District School Board a message that LGBT students deserve a policy that allows them to form gay-straight alliances, and a policy that recognizes their existence.

I am a devout Catholic and a homosexual. It is time the church realizes that gays can be Christians too. There are many other problems the church should be dealing with instead, like ridding itself of clergy that abuse children. I think God cares more about that than banning a club that preaches love, acceptance, and tolerance.

Aren't Catholics supposed to be Christians? Maybe you should practice what you preach and stop being such hypocrites. If you actually read the bible you would find that God loves everyone regardless of sexual orientation, and you would stop supporting anti-gay violence by supporting gay-straight alliances. You know, I was just reminded of why I left the Catholic church!

This is unacceptable. The Government of Ontario should begin transitioning away from extended public funding to Ontario Catholic schools.

As a teacher, I feel bad for LGBT students who are in Catholic School Boards with no support from their peers and school community. While I don't expect the Church to attempt to change their perceived word of God, they need to address the issues of safe sex and safe choices for gay students who will, secretly by necessity, carry out their homosexual relationships

The shocking and disturbing truth is that Ontario's Catholic boards are legally permitted to ignore the Charter and the Ontario Human Rights Code whenever it suits them. In other words, if the Vatican says gays are evil, then the Vatican will prevail in Ontario. Currently, the Catholic Church trumps human rights. This is a sad fact, one that McGuinty et al seem to never mention.

And it will continue to be so until we amend the Constitution. Until then, no legal challenges will matter. Luckily, it's not that hard. It's been amended 10 times since 1982, six of those times on matters of education. Quebec and NFLD amended it to do away with public funding for Catholic schools about 10 years ago.

Getting Alice Anne Lemay the Hutt to see the light is a waste of time. There will still be 28 other Catholic boards to go after, and each of them, I'm sure, has its own overweight Star Wars villain. Forget it! It's much, much more effective to focus our energy on getting the government to amend the Constitution to get rid of the Catholic boards' exemption from human rights legislation. Pull the rug right out from under these grotesque, hateful, "pious" jerks, and their Imperial masters (the Bishops).

The bottom line is that we need to start making the politicians talk about taking this homophobia out of the Constitution. At the moment, there is ZERO political will to do this.

But the tide is turning, and any party who recognizes this will be rewarded at the polls. We have an election coming up in October. We must get one of the Big Three parties on board and then put our weight behind them before September.
