Tell Senate Republicans: Hands Off NPR and PBS

    1. Sponsored by

      Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee

Republican extremists in Congress have spent months refusing to address the important issues facing our country, deciding to focus instead on the demands of the Tea Party.

Now they’re trying to defund Sesame Street, Curious George, and public news coverage. While these cuts – a full funding repeal to both National Public Radio and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting – won’t have an impact on our budget deficits, they will hurt quality programming and cripple a crucial public service.

Democrats saved public broadcasting in the most recent round of budget negotiations, but Republicans aren't going to let up.

Join Senate Democrats today in the fight against Republican extremism. Stand up for NPR and PBS before it’s too late.

Make big corporations and millionaires pay 2% more tax on all income and stop taking tax payers money to fund retirement benefits to members of federal government that are already millionaires and/or only serve 6 years or less.

Public broadcasting -- like NPR and PBS -- provides a crucial public service. Programming like Sesame Street and public news broadcasting entertain and educate millions of Americans every year.

Thanks to their independence from corporations like General Electric, News Corporation, and even Time Warner as nonprofit non-commercial organizations they do not have the conflict of interest issues FOX News, MSNBC or CNN would have in reporting news stories when it comes to corporate scandals.

Now, Republicans in Congress are trying to cut public radio and television in a misguided and misleading attempt to balance the budget.

While our country faces serious economic issues, eliminating public funding for NPR and PBS won't have any impact on our economic troubles. These organizations are rated by the public often as more trustworthy sources than commercial outlets. We trust NPR and PBS more for balanced, non-partisan unbiased reporting than the commercial outlets. We need real news to keep the public informed so we can have an informed citizenry able to make good choices and participate well in elections.

An informed citizenry is essential for the future of democracy in our country and for our democratic republic to continue to be successful. In any case public broadcasting is vastly under-funded in the U.S. compared to other countries with public media and is part of non-defense discretionary spending a small part of the federal budget. To reduce the deficit and national debt we need to reform entitlement programs and cut excessive defense spending, raise taxes etc on upper income earners at the very least (I know Republicans don't like increasing revenues at all with higher taxes on anyone) in the debate on how to reduce the deficit and debt leave public media funding alone.

The Internet needs to remain a free speech zone. The TEA Party does not include everyone. You are charged with representing constituents, not setting your moral agendas for all others to follow. Don't shove your old arguments in every citizen's face for your personal self-service and those motives of your friends in corporate America. I love the land under my feet which IS patriotism. You are all frauds and not leaders!

NPR and PBS are my go to radio and TV stations. They have enriched my life, and the lives of my children. Please do not take away their funding. Our family loves these stations.

Considering the high artistic and intellectual quality of NPR and PBS, defunding these gems of American culture would show that the "Barbarians are inside the gates." I implore you as representatives of all of the people in your districts or states do NOT defund these organizations.
