Tell Sallie Mae: Stop Harassing Phone Calls to Families

    1. Petition by

      Chris Thomas

      Washington, DC

Sallie Mae goes over the line. This company makes harassing phone calls to third parties and family members when they are trying to collect student loan debts. They call cell phones. Their operators are rude, argumentative and offensive. They imply that the third party should pay the debt. The practice of calling family members, employers and other third parties to collect a debt should stop. Congress won't act, members have to stand up to Sallie Mae.

I am not working except for substitute teaching. Between October 2010 - June 2011 I made $3,925.24 dollars, and that was my only income. I did not get a full-time job this summer, nor did I get a teaching job again this school year. I don't have the money to make payments on the loans, nor do I have money to pay the $150 forbearance fee every two months. When I explained this, the rude operator told me to forgo paying my other monthly bills because Sallie Mae is owed their money right NOW. I am done dealing with this company.
