Be Bold in the Race to Defeat AIDS

    1. Sponsored by

2011 marks 30 years since the first cases of AIDS were documented and the world has made incredible progress in its efforts to understand, prevent and treat this pandemic. AIDS used to be a ready death sentence, but by the end of 2010 more than 6.6 million people were on life-saving antiretroviral treatment, up from just 100,000 in 2003. Technology now makes it possible to prevent the transmission of HIV from mother‐to-child in as many as 98% of cases.

New research has shown that the rate of new HIV infections can be drastically reduced with a combination of existing and new technologies.

But despite great progress, for every person who goes on treatment, nearly two more are infected. HIV/AIDS currently infects 34 million men, women, and children, and more than 29 million have died. Infection rates have been especially high on the continent of Africa.

Funding for AIDS has leveled off. Now more than ever, we must recommit ourselves to the fight against HIV and to achieving specific, measurable goals that will help us bend the curve of this pandemic.

There are an estimated nine million people still in need of treatment. More than 370,000 children are infected with HIV each year. If we are to defeat the disease that has caused such enormous human suffering we must commit to forge ahead, to be bold and ambitious, without reservation.

We can turn this tragedy around. We might actually see the beginning of the end of AIDS - if we have the political will.

Please call on President Obama to focus his Administration on defeating HIV and stepping up U.S. global leadership in this arena.

Tell President Obama
Please lead on a bold, new plan on global AIDS this World AIDS Day — a plan that will increase the number of people on treatment, support the Global Fund, drastically reduce new HIV infections, and ensure that no child is needlessly born with HIV.

We cannot afford to rest in the fight against HIV and AIDS, as viruses often mutate more quickly than we humans can develop new medications...

Meanwhile, it is long past time that we end the AIDS based MSM blood ban in such nations as the United States and Canada that due to new technology is antiquated, discriminatory and unnecessarily limits the supply of blood and marrow donors. Great Britain ended their ban earlier this year, so what are the other nations waiting for?

      Mr. President:

I voted for you in the last election because I believed in the power of "YES WE CAN"!

As an AIDS sufferer for the past 15 years, I call upon your leadership to stem the tide of this deadly (if manageable chronically) disease so that HIV stops with me and those of us that already have it rather than have to endure the senseless tragedy that is the sad state of affairs that surrounds the level of new HIV infections every year..

If something is not done to keep funding for HIV/AIDS at the forefront of our country's R&R budgets at consistently high levels, we will never turn the corner (and hence the page) on this disease, and it will be here decades from today.

How many MORE people have to die or have their lives changed irrevocably before the gravity of the HIV/AIDS situation is fully felt?

Please, Mr. President, I believe in the power of "YES WE CAN!", and if you still do too, AIDS will be but a footnote in history sooner rather than later.
