GSAs serve an important role for LGBTQ students and their allies; providing them with a safe space to discuss issues and get the support that they need, as they are often faced with discrimination and bullying at the hands of their peers. The Secretary for Education to schools has stepped forward and stated that schools are to allow GSA's to form, and any attempts by the Monroe County School System to block these students from forming their GSA need to addressed. This petition will also serve to assure any teacher willing to step forward and sponsor the group that he or she is supported.

For more information see here.

As this issue develops we'll post additional details, at this point it appears the the main issue is that the students are unable to find a sponsor.

Thank you so much to the 823 people who have signed my petition in support of SQHS students looking to start their own GSA chapter. In light of recent events (in which a school administrator is accused of assaulting a student over a GSA t-shirt), it is my recommendation that you show your support at the following petition by the Tennessee Equality Project, which has a higher chance of success, and reflects the outcome we would all like to see.

      Many thanks.
      -Devon Hicks.

I am signing this petition to support LGBTI students and allies in their struggle to find safe spaces and recognition. Adolescence is hard enough! End the hate, end the fear.

Because being gay shouldn't make you a target.
