Tell Governor Cuomo: Don't lift New York's fracking ban!

On Thursday, The New York Times reported that Governor Cuomo would be ending New York State's ban on horizontal Hydraulic Fracturing (also known as fracking).[1]

Though the Administration initially called the claim "baseless," Cuomo's Department of Environmental Conservation (NYS DEC) late Thursday issued a statement confirming the report.[2]

The effective ban on this dangerous method of drilling for natural gas was put in place late last year by an executive order from former Governor David Patterson.

On Friday, as the ban expires, the NYS DEC will announce its recommendations that some fracking be allowed in New York. It's essential we do everything we can to urge Governor Cuomo to maintain the ban, and protect New York's water from dangerous fracking.

Tell Gov. Cuomo: Don't lift New York's fracking ban!

While the NYS DEC will recommend protecting some areas from fracking, including the watersheds of New York City and Syracuse, they will allow it in others. According to the Times this "would open up New York to one of the fastest-growing -- critics would say reckless -- areas of the energy industry."

If you're just learning about fracking, it's a relatively new method of drilling for natural gas by injecting water and a mix of nasty, toxic chemicals thousands of feet underground, literally cracking the rock to release trapped gas.[3]

These chemicals, along with methane gas, can leak through well casings into groundwater, poisoning the water, and in many cases literally causing people's tap water to light on fire![4]

Fracking poses many other threats to our water, including the release into rivers and streams of insufficiently treated, and often radioactive, fracking wastewater.[5]

Incredibly, the EPA has been prevented from regulating fracking under the Safe Drinking Water Act and Clean Water Act, by a loophole created by Dick Cheney in his secretive and insider-friendly 2005 energy policy.

That's why New York State's ban is so important. Take action now to urge Governor Cuomo to preserve New York's fracking ban, and protect New York's water from dangerous fracking.

Tell Gov. Cuomo: Don't lift New York's fracking ban!

Any additional fracking should be abolished. It has destroyed safe drinking water. The gas and oil companies are exempted from the clean drinking water act, the clean air act, and the clean water act, and other regulations besides the fact they do not have to disclose the chemicals they use. There's a reason for this; they are guilty as sin and have been left off the hook by our politicians. Democrats and Republicans alike.

Don't put our precious water resources at risk!!! There are too many areas in NYS and the Southern Tier that are already contaminated because of poor industrial practices! Don't put our beautiful natural resources at risk along with our groundwater that is almost impossible to clean up once contaminated!

You sir have one of the MAJOR ground water resources in the U.S. It stretches in a wide arc from eastern Wisconsin through Michigan's Upper Peninsula, across Ontario, on past Niagara Falls. We all know that Wisconsin & Michigan have been bought by the Koch Brothers right wing extremist GROUPS.

You may be the ONLY CLEAR VOICE OF REASON that 1/3 of the country can depend on. I'm begging, please visit the Niagara Escarpment Resource Network. Your jaw will drop. Your brain will be screaming, OH MY GOD!
