Tell Governor Brown and the California Legislature to Restore Funding to California's Public Schools or Parents Will Boycott All State Tests

Our children need quality education, and our state needs to invest in its future by hiring more teachers, reducing class-size, and providing safe transportation to and from schools.

Administering and scoring standardized assessments costs tax payers approximately $2 Billion per year or $379 per student (grades 2nd-12th).

California Ed Code Section 60615 allows parents the right to opt out of the state tests. Parents can pressure our state legislators and school district leaders to provide our children with safe access to a quality education by exercising this right to opt out of state assessments.

We are in favor of educational accountability; however, if our children's learning is not supported, we will exercise our right to opt out of all state assessments. Children's learning must be supported. If it is not, we will not support state testing.

Here’s how to act:
1) Sign and share petition.
2) If you have children in school, inform your district administrators that unless school funding is restored you will exercise your right to opt out of all state assessments this spring.
3) Write or call Governor Brown and your state legislators and tell them to make education funding a priority in the following ways:
* Rescind Teacher Lay-Offs and hire new teachers;
* Reduce class sizes
* Restore funding to provide safe transportation to and from schools

PLEASE JOIN US IN DEMANDING THAT OUR LOCAL AND STATE LEADERS MAKE FUNDING PUBLIC EDUCATION A PRIORITY.

Published last month....help make it a reality and get the Legislators attention! Send your letter to school, write your local legislators and tell the plight of your district. I am sure that yours is not all that different from ours.
In the last month since this article the Super and board in our district has voted to layoff 17 teachers(20% of certificated), 59 classified staff(including all of our busing department), considering increase the no busing radius (1.5 mi - elem & 2 mi - middle school & high school), considering 9 furlough days for teachers, and only considering furlough days/cuts for admin IF the tax initiative does not go through in November.
We are a small district with 2000 students (4 schools K-12). We have no sidewalks, and recent checks on the the Megan's Law website indicated that we have 11 REGISTERED sex offenders within a 1 mi radius of one of our schools with a recent attempted abduction of a girl within 1block of school.

    2. Opting Out of the State Tests ..... Here's How: Send this letter to school

      Lisa McCabe

Give this letter to your Principal:
      Dear Mr. ________________________________(Principal)
Please accept this letter as my request to excuse my child, ______________________________________, from participation in all state testing. This is my right under §60615 of the California Education Code.
I understand that it is an educator’s professional duty to assess the learning of students and I fully support our teachers, our principal and our staff in doing so. This request is not intended to restrict professional assessment by the classroom teacher to which my child is assigned. I am exercising my right to opt out of the state assessments because the continued budget cuts to education demonstrate a lack of support for student learning in the classroom. This must change, children's learning must be supported with proper funding, safe transportation, adequate and updated materials and smaller class sizes. If it is not, I will not support state testing.
      Sincerely,

See site below for more info

    4. Spread the Word - Parent Support for Opting Out of State Tests Growing!

      Dear Friends,

More and more parents are pushing back against budget cuts to our schools, and over-reliance on testing to measure student learning, and the loss to instructional time due to the focus on standardized assessments.

Here in Southern California, parents in San Gabriel have notified their School Superintendent and School Board that they are unhappy with changes to the school calendar that impact the quality of their family life and are going to keep their children home during testing.

In Texas, over 40 School Boards have signed resolutions speaking out against the tests in the wake of parent complaints and budget cuts!

Let's keep the pressure on. We can make change! Sign the petition, write a letter to your superintendent and Governor Brown. Unless they support learning in the classroom, we will not support the state test this spring! Feel free to contact me by e-mail at lisamccabedpt@gmail.com with any questions or suggestions you may have.

      Sincerely,

      Lisa McCabe

      Dear Family, Friends and Neighbors,

Thank you for your support. You will be pleased to know that in just five days we have gained signatures from nearly 200 individuals and are on our way to sending a clear message to Sacramento:

Restore Funding to California's Public Schools or Parents Will Boycott All State Tests!

I will be speaking at my Board of Education Meeting this evening at 7PM to inform my local community of the petition and encourage them to join us in the boycott. I have invited the local media to cover the event to help generate broader interest.

I would like to ask each of you to commit to getting at least three additional supporters from your networks to sign the petition by this evening. The larger our numbers, the more serious we will be taken.

Feel free to contact me here at change.org or e-mail at lisamccabedpt@gmail.com with any questions or suggestions you may have.

I have tolerated increased testing and the way it cheats my children of educational hours for years... until funding was cut to yet more programs. Now I'm annoyed. What's in it for my kid? We're not going to sit passively while you defund public education.

I support this petition and am sick of our fat government that takes care of themselves at the expense of the people they have been elected to represent and protect.

I agree with the teachers here who are commenting that all we are doing is teaching kids how to test! Also we are spending a ridiculous amount of money doing it. Money that could obviously be used to directly improve our childrens educational experience through smaller class sizes and availabilty of art and music programs that will benefit them far more in the future than being good test takers. Studies have shown that kids exposed to art and music programs develop better problem solving skills and do better overall than those who don't. My children are homeschooled for this very reason, but now that I know that I have the right to opt out of testing to hopefully give these idiots in charge of our education dollars the kick in the pants they need to change their priorities, maybe by the time my one year old is ready for school, we will have a public school system worth sending him to. I am not against testing in and of itself, but when it becomes such a top priority over the actual education our kids are being provived, then it's a no-brainer to use whatever means necessary to force our elected officials and school administrators to change their priorities. It's unfortunate that the only way we as parents are listened to is when we stop "going with the program" and hit them where it hurts, the pocketbook. I will be asking all of the parents I know to support this petition! Thank You!!

i am signing this for several reasons ! my forth grade daughter who is very smart came home in tears the other day with a note from her teacher requesting that she start math tutoring 2 days a week at the school because she didnt score high enough on ONE !! bench mark test. mind you she is in the highest math class her grade offers and scores between 97%-100% on all math and language arts exams. this bench mark exam was the first time ever ! she scored low. this "recommendation" was based off of the one exam and not on her overall performance. im so sick of every single day these bench mark CRAP !! everyday !! they are not going to school any more to learn, they are going to take tests!. 50 teachers in our district will not have jobs come the new school year. in my daughters fourth grade class this year she had 44 students in the class. Last year in my sons Kindy class when the am and pm class would lap over in time the teacher would have at least 60 !! yes 60 !! students for a few hours. all of this is not acceptable and needs to stop now !!

I am in favor of not laying the teachers for short of budget. Tomorrow's citizens need today's teachers to guide them and keep them on track. This layoffs would only add to school dropouts.
