Tell Animal Planet to stop promoting Rattlesnake Republic and the slaughter of rattlesnakes

      Converse, TX

Rattlesnakes are an integral part of our ecosystems but through poor education and misplaced fears they are often killed. Rattlesnake populations are suffering massive declines across the US due to habitat destruction and humans needlessly killing them. Many states have placed rattlesnakes under protection making it illegal to kill them because of their declining numbers.

Animal Planet, a subsidiary of the Discovery Communications, LLC., blatantly promotes the slaughter of rattlesnakes with their show Rattlesnake Republic. The show follows around a group of rattlesnake hunters that collect the snakes to sell for slaughter. For an organization that is supposed to be devoted to animals this show is a disgusting display of animal exploitation for profit. Animal Planet has sunk to a frightening low in the pursuit of ratings.

Please join me in expressing to Animal Planet and Discovery Communications, LLC. your disgust over the promotion of slaughtering rattlesnakes for profits and ratings. Let’s ask that they remove this terrible show and any other shows like it from their network and promote only programs that focus on education and conservation.

Snakes are an important part of our ecosystem, and I grew up with an irrational fear of all snakes in part because of Hollywood. These animals, venomous or not, are very important and keep rodent populations down, which in turn keeps us healthier. STOP airing shows that promote senseless fear of important species, but instead, educate people to let the snakes be!

As someone who works in the reptile conservation field and who has watched with interest the shift from persecution to education and conservation in N. American rattlesnake roundups I was shocked to see Animal Planet carry this show. It conveys a harmful and backwards message that exploitates.and amplifies the fears and misunderstandings of Americans that are increasingly isolated from the natural world. Frankly, it's counterfactual dramatised bullshit intended to make money by glorifying the killing of declining wildlife in America. Animal Planet is moving from a lowest-common-denominator joke to a malicious and exploitative spreader of ignorance.

Animal Planet needs to take the lead in conservation programming and needs to immediately stop the exploitation and killing of these misunderstood creatures. My pet snake Sebastian also gives his vote too! Stop the Slaughter!

Animal Planet continually and vulgarly creates, airs and supports shows that are destructive, cruel and fatal for any variety of animal species. Animal info and statistics are continually far from factual, truthfal and outright lies.
