Dr. Regina Benjamin

Be our voice in current attacks on the health of women.

These attacks include Senate Republicans' efforts to weaken the Violence Against Women Act, federal and individual state initiatives to defund Planned Parenthood, and the proposal that any health care procedure that is objectionable to an employer be legally withheld from her employees.
The missing voices in all of these political efforts are those of the physician and the millions of American women who are directly affected. You have extensive experience in primary care in America. Additionally, you are a woman and a minority. You know what dire consequences can come from decreasing health care coverage for citizens, decreasing protection from domestic violence, and removing our options for controlling family size and population growth. We are asking that "America's Doctor", as our national voice on medical care, speak out to support us.

    1. Virginia lawmakers passed mandate for pre-pregnancy termination ultrasound

My message to Gov. of Va: Governor, as a physician sworn to "do no harm", I am appalled at a mandate for an unnecessary procedure such as ultrasound to be performed on women choosing pregnancy termination. Using a medical procedure as punishment and inducement to change one's mind is wrong, wrong, wrong! The choice of pregnancy termination is between a woman and her doctor, and no physician in his or her right mind would order a contraindicated procedure like this. Is the Commonwealth of Virginia prepared to defend against untold number of malpractice suits?

    2. The Blunt Amendment is coming to a vote in the Senate very soon.

This proposed legislation allows any employer to deny health insurance coverage for any condition or treatment the employer objected to. This is a preposterous addition to the attack on the health of female citizens. Join me in asking our Surgeon General to speak out against this wave of efforts against women.

I support the petition because after all it is OUR BODIES and to the Senate Republicans and those employers who are limiting access, it is OUR BODIES AND OUR SOULS!

I see this measure as a tactic using the health of women as a political football. The effect such a measure could have on women's health nationwide could be devastating. I will make my concerns known through my Congressional Rep and my vote.

I am an Internal Medicine physician and an elected official. I see how decision making by elected folks impacts others. I see a move to control women. And it will be women without resources that will be most negatively impacted. No contraception. No abortion. No healthcare. What happens to a dream deferred?

I wholeheartedly support this petition. I would respectfully request that we not refer to ourselves as "minority." We are not and we can not minimize ourselves with the words that we choose. We are People of Color. Specifically I identify as African American.

I find it reprehensible that availability of basic healthcare continues to be used as a political platform in this country. Such moral and ethical questions and energies could be much more effectively applied to economical and consumer practices.
