When my daughter died 3 days before her 23rd birthday & 1 week before her college graduation Citibank sent 15 letters to us & our family within 8 days to request her death certificate. They told us her loans would be waived and we would owe nothing when they received it. Instead, the loans came out of deferment and became due and payable. We struggle to pay them monthly while Citibank received a bailout from the American public and then took away forbearances and help to their customers during this horrible economic time in our history. They should waive these loans like they said they would, death is not a default by the payee on the loan, it should be a reason for waiver, not a reason to create more hardship on a grieving family.

I am paying back school loans myself and would never want my family left with the burden of my debt. The emotional suffering is enough. Time for some empathy and understanding from corporate America. No wonder why our economy is in the state it is in. The big companies want to get richer while draining the accounts of the less fortunate. Very sad and disheartening.

I know what it's like to lose someone before they had a full life to live. Then to have a company not stand by their word on the loans hurts, because the parents have enough to deal with trying to take care of her funeral! My mother and I had that happen to us with my sister and this bank needs to be worthy of their words to this family!

I struggle to find a way to pay my own student loans - I cannot imagine the trauma of a family losing a daughter and then having such an insensitive request made of them despite the bank's promise! Horrible!

It's not fair to the family , they have enough coping with the death of their daughter. It could happen to anyone. There should be no question ..the loans should be waived. Citibank should not go back on their word.
