Vieques is a small U.S. territorial island located eight miles from the main island of Puerto Rico. For over 200 days per year from 1941-2003, the Navy used significant portions of the Island of Vieques for training exercises and munitions testing. During this period, the Navy tested nearly every kind of munitions employed by the military, dropping over 80 million pounds of ordnance on Vieques from 1984-1998 alone. The Navy has refused to disclose the complete list and amounts of all materials sprayed, dropped, tested, or disposed of on the island and surrounding ocean during the 62-years of weapons testing. In 2003, following intense public pressure, the Navy pulled out of Vieques. But they left behind the multitude of substances found in the munitions that had been dropped on the island and which are known to be toxic to humans, especially to developing children.

Did you know that the endangered Humpback Whales are known of their beautiful and magical sounds? That they  migrate every year to their summer feeding grounds near the poles to warmer winter breeding waters closer to the Equator. Humpback mothers and their young swim close together, often touching one another with their flippers with what appear to be gestures of affection ? (Nat geo, 2012 ; http://animals.nationalgeographic.com/animals/mammals/humpback-whale/)

Now imagine that drowned through the noise pollution and contamination of a military base?  please help us save our sovereignty, our sea and wildlife in the Dominican republic. sign and share this petition! thanks you and may you be rewarded for your help!

I have visited this island as a tourist and have marveled in its pristine condition. We MUST NOT build anything here because it is a special place that needs to be protected.

I am NEVER cool with conservation parks being torn down for anything. Military bases go double.

I can imagine no national interest which would be furthered by the creation of this base, and at a time when our budget is being so heavily scrutinized, I'm shocked to see this plan has come as far along as it has. This project flies in the face of good security or monetary sense, in addition to being a potentially disastrous disruption to the local environment and all of its rich biodiversity.
