Stop the Sale of African Lion Meat

The African lion population is decreasing and it's not just occurring in Africa. In the U.S., lions are being killed so consumers can eat a lion steak or lion burger. We must ensure this beautiful species' survival by sending a clear message to those who sell lion meat that this practice is unacceptable and must be stopped immediately. Your support of this petition is urgently needed and very much appreciated. Let's do our part to ensure that the African lion is around for future generations. Please say no to lion meat, lion parts, trophy hunting, and any another activities that needlessly decimate the lion population.

The African lion - one of Africa's most iconic animals - has experienced an alarming population decrease since the 1950's. Today there are only 18,000 - 20,000 lions remaining in Africa and the actual number may be much lower.

The sale of this endangered animals's meat is highly irresponsible and must stop.

African Lion Facts:

The lion has vanished from over 80% of its historic range.

The lion is now extinct in 26 countries and can be found in only 7 countries.

Lions are currently listed as “Vulnerable” on the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species; and in West and Central Africa, the species is now classified as “Endangered.”

Thank you to everyone who has signed. The legislation is awaiting full house passage. Here's an update from my blog: Please send the Petition link to friends so we can keep this in the news to raise awareness. The passage of this bill may contribute towards the consideration of the US FWS to add the lion to the endangered list.

A few months ago, I started a petition on against the sale of African lion meat in U.S. exotic meat shops. The petition has only received a decent amount of signatures (about 4,400 as of last count) but it's a start.

Apparently the petition and a newly introduced bill has ruffled the feathers of the owner of the shop that sells African lion meat.

      Case Updates

Czimer entered his plea before Judge Blanche Manning at the U.S. District Court in Chicago. Czimer admitted that between August 1997 and October 31, 1998, he also purchased the carcasses of 16 federally protected tigers, four lions, two mountain lions and one liger - a tiger-lion hybrid.

The animals were then skinned, butchered and sold as "lion meat" at Czimer's Meat and Seafood, realizing a profit of more than $38,000. Czimer said he purchased the carcasses from co-defendants William Kapp of Tinley Park, Illinois, Steven Galecki of Crete, Illinois, and Kevin Ramsey formerly of Oak Forest, Illinois, and now living in Wisconsin

On December 18, 2003, Richard Czimer, Jr., owner of the wholesale exotic meat business known as Czimer's Game and Sea Foods, Inc., in Lockport, IL, was sentenced by U.S. District Court Judge Blanche Manning, Northern District of Illinois for his role in the wildlife trafficking case that involved the killing and selling of exotic cats, including endangered tigers and leopards. Czimer, along with his business, had previously pled guilty to felony Lacey Act counts for purchasing meat of endangered species and later selling the uninspected meat to the public for human consumption. 8. The Lion Supporters Are Increasing!

We're up to 381 supporters - people who care about the lion and it's survival enough to sign this petition. If you know anyone who works in the media where's it online or print or TV, please pass this on to them. If we can get enough signatures (and I believe we can), we can shut these guys down which will mean a victory for the African lion. This company is creating a demand by selling it as an exotic meat. Let's show them that the public not only has NO interest in eating lions, but in fact want to protect them. If you read the information on the prior conviction, these people were involved in buying LIVE big cats and killing them (in their cages) and then selling the meat and hides. This is absolutely unacceptable. Please ... help me speak out against them and shut them down once and for all. Thank you.
