Stop Military Recruitment of Children

    1. Kevin Haake
    2. Petition by

      Kevin Haake

      Lincoln, NE

Our military services have no business recruiting children under the age of 18.  Each year hundreds of thousands of kids in the US are actively recruited by our military, and each year well over 10,000 of these kids under 18 join the armed forces.

This petition asks our elected officials to pass legislation barring all forms of military recruitment of children by the armed services, including the STARBASE and Junior ROTC programs.  It also asks our representatives to change existing legislation to prevent schools from releasing student contact information to military recruiters.

THANK YOU for your past support! It means a lot, and it shows that we are not alone in our belief that student data should not be released to military recruiters without first seeking consent for such a release. Our kids deserve better than the status quo!

There are a couple of legislative actions that we are currently supporting. Could you take a minute or two to look over the Student Privacy Protection Act and the Youth PROMISE Act? I think you’ll agree that they would be great steps forward for our young people! Please consider taking that extra step by registering your support for them here: http://www.popvox.com/orgs/srkcampaign. Simply click the three SUPPORT buttons towards the upper right hand side of the page. Your representative WILL be notified of the bills you support in this manner.

In a nutshell, the Student Privacy Protection Act would help ensure that the privacy rights of our kids and families are upheld by ensuring that schools obtain parental permission before releasing private student data to military recruiters.

The YOUTH Promise Act focusses on the problems of violence that too many of our kids face. We should foster and promote peaceful pathways for our kids to follow as they transition from childhood to adulthood. Too often our young people become ensnared in a culture of violence with few opportunities provided to help them reach their potential. The Youth PROMISE Act would help provide such pathways to at-risk youth on a consistent and ongoing basis. We’ve recently signed on in support of this bill.

Kids never believe they are the ones who won't make it--their brains are not mature. (I'm a retired school psychologist).

Children are not adult soldiers and must be protected, not recruited to kill.

I don't like seeing vulnerable young people duped by aggressive recruiters especially young people who's parents can't afford to help pay for their education

One of my nephews was in high school when the World Trade Center was destroyed. The recruiter told him he wouldn't be a "real American" if he didn't sign up. I find such behavior offensive.
