Stop Bullying: Tell Congress to Pass the Safe Schools Improvement Act

    1. Petition by

      The Peace Alliance

It is not acceptable for our nation's school system to continue to inadequately address bullying.  More than 1 in 4 kids are bullied in schools.  Our kids deserve so much better.

Bullying and harassment fosters a climate of fear and disrespect that can seriously impair the physical and psychological health of its victims and create conditions that negatively affect learning, thereby undermining the ability of students to achieve their full potential.  We must act now to encourage our elected officials to pass the Safe Schools Improvement Act into law.

The Safe Schools Improvement Act ( S.506 and H.R. 1648) will ensure that:

- Schools and districts have comprehensive and effective student conduct policies that include clear prohibitions regarding bullying and harassment, including LGBT youth;

- Schools and districts focus on effective prevention strategies and professional development designed to help school personnel meaningfully address issues associated with bullying and harassment;

- States and districts maintain and report data regarding incidents of bullying and harassment in order to inform the development of effective federal, state, and local policies that address these issues.

      I have witnessed horrible bullying...girls to girls and against LGBT. I can see how the school and adults turn a blind eye more often than not and they minimize this entirely!

      I have witnessed the devastating effects of bullying in the classroom as a teacher and as a parent of a bullied child. Some teachers are not equipped to deal with these incidents to the detriment of ALL students in their care - not just those who are being bullied!
