Stop breaking families apart: End 287g now!

    1. Petition by

      DreamActivist

URGENT: 287g has led to racial profiling and the targeting of hard working members of the community, the separation of families, and the creation of an atmosphere of terror among immigrant communities in Rockingham County & Harrisonburg, VA. 287(g) has led to a less safe community for us all

Make a call to Sheriff Bryan F. Hutcheson: (540) 574-4969 or (540) 564-3800

Sample script: I am calling to urge Sheriff Hutcheson to put an immediate end to the 287(g) Program in Rockingham County. This program uses local funds to help enforce a federal immigration law enforcement function and breaks families apart.

As a school teacher I am concerned when families are being forced apart by needless deportations of parents who have not committed serious offenses. This flies in the face of what we stand for as a nation of immigrants.

287 g creates an atmosphere of fear and makes our communities less safe because it deteriorates communication and trust between law enforcement and the immigrant community.

I work with the immigrant community almost daily and see their commitment and contributions to our community. I know firsthand of those who have been stopped for non-criminal acts and have been arrested.

It is important because I am also hispanic and I would like to help my community to not be afraid and to be safe.

All people must be treated with dignity and children must be cherished and nurtured. Keeping families together is the best way forward. Deport criminals but not others.
