From petition creator, Krissy B: There's now a more specified listing on the Steam store pages! :D It now tells us what languages the game comes in via audio, text and subtitles!

For the past 7 years I have had a severe hearing loss. There has been several games on Steam I have purchased that do not have subtitles and are unplayable for me. This is due to the fact Valve has not bothered to mention on games store pages on Steam if a game does or does not have subtitles, and if it does in which language it has them.

I am starting this petition as I want to take action, I don't think in this day and age that I'm asking much to know if I can play a game or not. It would not only be people with a hearing loss that benefit from this feature but those who speak other languages or struggle with peoples accents in games. Even a lot perfect hearing gamers I come across seem to like using subtitles on their games.

FACT: Approximately 12% of the U.S. population or 38 million Americans have a significant hearing loss.
...And that's just in the U.S, taking that small fraction of the world into question that's a LOT of people and I'm sure some of these are gamers.

Not only would knowing if subtitles are available and in what languages benefit people with a hearing loss / who speak another language but I also believe it would encourage people to purchase and play more games.

If someone knows from the start if something is suitable for them to play without them having to look around, ask questions, see if they have friends who own the game and ask them to launch it and check if it has subtitles etc then they'd be MUCH more likely to buy something.

It doesn't have to be much, just a small icon on the store page, even an [S] showing it has subtitles, then hover over it to see which languages are supported (just a small idea)

If DVD's bother to let us know if a DVD is subtitled or not then why not games?

Start listing if a game has subtitles on the Steam store page!

Omg..I got a pm from a friend of mine saying "so you got subtitles on the store then" I was like, huh?

Checked the store to see what they were on about..LOOK AT THIS!

I'm aware that subtitles aren't crossed off in that example but oh my goodness! It means steam are doing something about it!!! :D If only they'd replied to my email and I could have raved about it sooner haha

I'll look more into this, hope it catches big and I see more on the store, going to search and see how many games have this currently, so excited!

A HUGE thank you to everyone, you should be so proud of yourself, lets hope this works out well :D

Had a quick look round, can't see any games that have subtitles listed yet but hey, there's an option! They just need to fill it in now :D how great is that?!

I've just spent some time emailing the Valve employees individually which I could get my hands on :P so hopefully we shouldn't have to wait too long for an official response (fingers crossed.)

We've all done so amazingly so far, 1000 signatures (well - over!) in a week is a huge success. I can't tell you how proud I am of everyone and how thankful I am for all the signatures, support, shares and more!

Please, please continue to spread the word as it's not over yet :)

Lets hope we continue to get a large amount of signatures which will make a huge impact.

I'll keep you guys updated and let you know when I hear something back.

      Thanks again!

    5. Clarification

I think peoples lines are getting a bit blurred to what my petition is for..some people seem to think I'm petitioning for there to be subtitles on all games, which I'm not. Right now lets face it that would be a very unrealistic expectation. :P I'm petitioning for Steam to let us KNOW if a game has subtitles or not on the store page, not that the game MUST have subtitles. Just wanted to make this clear.

Hopefully there'll be enough support and interest though that after this is (hopefully) implemented then we can move onto groups of volunteers for subtitles of indie games etc and see how that goes :)

Also possibly further petitions / campaigns for subtitles on games, no idea what the future holds right now!

But first things first, please keep spreading the word and hopefully we can get Steam to let us know if games have subtitles or not on store pages and we can tick this off our to do list :)

Personally, I'm more in for full closed captioning. But just the subtitles are quite useful as well. Both for people that have yet to master the language as for people with hearing problems.

Everyone should be able to enjoy the story and dialogues.
