Southern California has become unlivable due to the number of pit bulls. I want the freedom to walk in my neighborhood safely. It has been gone for a long, long time.

As a former resident of California, I would like to take a moment to show my support for a mandatory spay / neuter law specific to pit bulls and other fighting dog breeds.

Unwanted backyard bred pit bulls are a huge burden on animal control. The exploited dogs are bred by irresponsible people for the sake of turning a quick buck and many wind up in animal shelters before reaching the age of 2. One reason they are surrendered to shelters, or picked up as strays, is that the people breeding them are not professionals dedicated to preserving or improving the breed. These dogs often have unstable temperaments and are given up due to aggression towards other dogs and other animals, as well as aggression directed towards people.

Cesar Millan, TV's Dog Whisperer supports mandatory spay / neuter of pit bulls. Here is a video clip where he affirms his support:

In this video Cesar Millan talks about how successful mandatory spay / neuter has been in Germany:

Another TV personality associated with pit bulls is Tia Torres of the show Pitbulls and Parolees. Tia also supports mandatory spay / neuter of pit bulls.

These people working in the trenches understand that we cannot adopt our way out of this mess, and studies have concluded that 900,000+ pit bulls are euthanized annually in US shelters. Why keep breeding dogs just to kill them?

I hope California will lead the nation in the movement to reduce unwanted breeding and the resulting euthanasia of pit bulls.

I'm sick and tired of folks living in fear in their communities... afraid to let their children play in their OWN YARDS - afraid to walk their dog through the neighborhood - afraid to walk THEMSELVES through down the block for fear of being attacked by a roaming dog. Since nearly half of all dog attacks on people/pets/animals is by pit bulls/mixes, mandatory spay/neuter will go a long way to begin to reduce their numbers and thereby lessen the probability of folks being maimed/killed by one.

Additionally, the burden placed on Animal Control/Police/Shelters will be mitigated if the pit population is decreased.

Thank you for you vote for PUBLIC SAFETY!
