Today, there are 760 million people over the age of 60 worldwide. By 2050, there will be over 2 billion people over 60, and 80% will live in developing countries.
Age discrimination and ageism are widely tolerated around the world, and national protections are inconsistent at best. In focus groups across 36 countries, 43% of older people surveyed were afraid of personal violence. Despite this evidence, no international protections have been established to safeguard their rights.
We believe the contribution older people make to society is invaluable, yet they remain some of the poorest and most neglected people in the world. Older people have a right to lead dignified, active, healthy, and secure lives. Help us give them a voice. Sign the petition to call on Secretary of State John Kerry to stand up for the rights of older people.
