My late father was a military and legal pioneer. He was a member of the first African American Armored Unit, 761st Tank Batallion, in US Army history serving under General George Patton during WWII. After 20 years of service he retired from the service and went to Law School at the University of Illinois. He was the first African American elected to county-wide office in Champaign County Illinois as State's Attorney and then became a US Attorney for a broad swath of downstate Illinois. Despite his upbringing in a segregated country my father embodied the best of the American Spirit.

Well to all that have been to this page and to those of you are new this is where it all started for me at the start of 2011. This story is what it is all about for me to recognize my father to a certain extent an unknown member of our "Greatest Generation" Its been a long road but I encourage all of you now more than ever to spread the story. The local elected representatives of over 150,000 after much debate and discussion have passed resolutions in support of this quest. See the story at the beginning

I would be honored for the courthouse to be named after an American Military Hero and especially one that hails from Champaign County.

This would be a great tribute to a man who accomplished so much in his lifetime. He sacrificed for all of us, this is the least we could do for him. I would be honored to have the courthouse named after Mr. Burgess.

Mr. Burgess' contributions as a member of an important but often overlooked Army unit followed by his life of service make him the calibre of person who should have a locel federal building.

I knew Mr. Burgess and agree wholeheartedly that he deserves this honor. His service and integrity speak for themselves. My father who had more Republican leanings campaigned for Mr. Burgess a Democrat. It is this kind of bi-partisan effort that our country needs now. So, I support Mr Burgess' son Steve in this initiative.
