Allow gays to donate blood.

I'd like to keep this short and to the point:

Red Cross is always saying that they need more blood donations, but they aren't allowed to accept gay donations just based on their sexual orientation. We are in the 21st century and we know that HIV/AIDS is not just a "gay" disease, so to limit homosexuals only because of their risk factor is wrong and needs to change. With the heavy screening they put blood donations through now, there should be no reason that homosexuals cannot donate their blood.

I emailed Red Cross and this is what they informed me of on the policy of donation for gays:
The American Red Cross is disappointed with the decision made by the Department of Health and Human Services Secretary’s Advisory Committee on Blood Safety and Availability not to recommend a change to the Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) policy of a lifetime deferral for men who have sex with other men. While the Red Cross is obligated by law to follow the guidelines set forth by the FDA, we also strongly support the use of rational, scientifically-based deferral periods that are applied fairly and consistently among donors who engage in similar risk activities.
Here is the link to the most recent joint statement made by the Red Cross, AABB and America's Blood Centers:
      Safety is Paramount
Patient safety and the integrity of the blood supply are the top priorities of the blood community.
The safety of both the blood
