Renew the lease for Drakes Bay Oyster Company

    1. Petition by

      Jonathan Wu

      Novato, CA

Drakes Bay Oyster Farm, a beautiful and productive resource on the Point Reyes Peninsula, is in imminent danger of being a thing of the past.  For generations this family farm, completely surrounded by the other family ranches and farms in the working landscape of the Point Reyes National Seashore, has been a popular visitor destination. The oyster farm’s 40-year renewable lease expires on November 30th.

The continuation of this historic oyster farm is critical.  Significantly, the National Academy of Sciences found that the oyster farm is not degrading the natural resources of Drakes Estero.  Future generations depend on your decision to preserve jobs, history, culture, food, education and the environment.   Please issue a renewable 10 year permit for the farm’s on-shore buildings as authorized by Congress, support the necessary upgrades to the onshore facilities, and allow the California Department of Fish and Game to continue to lease and regulate the shellfish production as they have since 1934.

we use to buy those in tubs at the grocery or boxes for bbq why do we have to eliminate all the last of the hunter gatherers as we have done to wild caught fishing industry. what will we replace it with farmed seafood fed on chicken excrement spawned in Fukushima?

I don't think it is right to close this place down and strip the family's that work there of their livelyhood. They have been in business for too many years for some who sets behind a desk and has nothing better to do then cause trouble for people just to keep from being bored. Leave this business alone and let them continue with what they have been doing for 40+years. There are too many people who like taking a ride and stoping there to gets some fresh oysters. They have not caused any trouble to anyone, so why cause trouble for them.

This is a great institution. My family visits here several times a yeaarr for the best oysters, sustainably farmed, on the planet. The north bay is ours and this is OUR oyster farm. Let us be! We're doing it right, while industrial farms pollute our oceans and ruin our land. Save Drakes!
