SB 924 Physical Therapists: Direct Access to Service

    1. Petition by

      California Physical Therapy Association

Consumers should have the choice to go directly to a physical therapist for treatment. Did you know that current law requires any person in California seeking treatment from a physical therapist to first visit a medical doctor for a referral? The current barrier to access is caused solely by a 44-year old Attorney General's opinion. California law does not state that a diagnosis is needed from a physician in order to begin treatment by a physical therapist.

Consumer direct access to physical therapy  would ensure that patients could see a physical therapist directly for the treatment of movement related conditions. Direct Access would help streamline health care delivery in California. Patients would no longer have to endure painful delays and expense in order to recieve treatment from their physical therapist. Patients who suffer from chronic and recurring injuries, senior citizens, and low income individuals would greatly benefit from the passge of SB 924.

Please support SB 924 by signing this petition to allow Californian's the right to choose physical therapy directly!

We are losing choice in this country at every turn. Being a massage therapist, I'd like to be able to refer directly to therapies and therapists of all kinds and let the client decide from informed choice without the bias of the medical profession often scaring the client away. We need more 'care' in our system and less pills, shots, and operations.

Because physical therapists are the safest, best value to the health care system and provide surgery free, drug free solutions to common movement problems.

Our daughter, a Licensed Physical Therapist, has a BS, MS and Doctorate in Physical therapy. Over 7 years of study + internship should at least equal a Doctorate in Chiropractic. Just as a Dr of Psychology knows when he is treating a hypochondriac or someone actually needing medical care, so a DR of PT would know if their patient needed a medical referral. Please support SB 924.

I am a licensed physical therapist in NY and CA. NY has direct access, CA does not. Guess where I choose to live and work. I wonder why I maintain my CA license. Might not be worth the registration fees and state-specific continuing education.
