      Silver City, NV

The Virginia City National Historical Landmark District (VCNLHD) was established in 1961as a property with exceptional value to the history of the nation. VCNLHD was listed in 1988 as "endangered" by the National Park Service due to cumulative effects of surface mining on the historic landscape. These effects have recently accelerated under large scale surface mining activities. The Secretary can take steps to mitigate or abate effects of surface mining in VCNLHDas provided by 16 U.S.C. 1908, "Mining in the National Parks Act of 1976, Section 9."

    6. Why I started this petition

      Robert Elston
      Petition Organizer

I started this petiton because after I asked the Nevada SHPO to forward a letter to Ken Salazar, I have never gotten a response from the Secretary, and to my knowlege, the Nevada SHPO hasn't followed up. You can see my original letter to Secretary Salazar in my blog (link below).

Miner's claim that BLM cease and desist order is "healed" is good spin, but untrue. If you see their press release, be advised.

    13. BLM Cease and Desist order is a serious problem for miners

      Robert Elston
      Petition Organizer

Problems addressed by the C&D could result in actions triggering National Environmental Policy Act and an Environmental Impact Statement, or litigation in Federal court, either one of which would slow things down. While this may be good news for our supporters, we can't count on it and we need to keep on signing, passing it on and pushing!

Here's a piece in the Las Vegas Review Journal about our struggle. You can see the mining company spinning like mad. Watch my blog for spin deconstruction. I'm still trying to get more information about the BLM cease and desist order and the right of way issues. Thanks to everyone who signed the petition so far - pass it on!!

    19. BLM issues cease and desist order to Comstock Mining, Inc (CMI)

      Robert Elston
      Petition Organizer

The order is to stop CMI from trespassing on BLM land and road rights of way they don't hold in order to build their heap leach facility in American Flat (see the link below). This may eventually trigger provisions of the National Environmental Policy Act requiring an environmental impact study, but that might not happen without public support. Keep those signatures coming!

Love the area and I have family there. Also, there is no price on destroying a landscape that will take hundreds of years to recover.

My parents live there and will lose their home. Plus, the incredible health risks and extreme ecological damage this would incur.
