Save the Pond Eddy Bridge

      New York, NY

The costs of replacing the historic bridge with a modern structure will be huge:
· $12 million+ in Federal and State (NY and PA) highway funds
· the loss of a unique historical structure
· environmental damage to the Delaware River in the construction phase – estimated at 1-2 years
· economic damage to local tourism and recreational businesses by closing the Delaware River for at least one season

"Assemblywoman Aileen Gunther (D-Forestburgh), who wrote a strong letter to Governor Cuomo urging that the project be scrapped, Tuesday said the State Department of Transportation has informed her that the money that was targeted for the project over the Delaware River between Sullivan County and Shohola, Pennsylvania, will be reprogrammed for other purposed.

“Right now the Pond Eddy Bridge can be visited for years to come,” Gunther said.

In her letter to Cuomo last week, the assemblywoman said the project was not the best use of New York taxpayers’ dollars since the bridge only serves a small number of Pennsylvania residents living along a landlocked road in Shohola Township.

Several historic preservation and environmental groups have been outspoken about plans to demolish the current bridge and build a new one."

All historic buildings should be preserved and restored to their original state for future generations to enjoy.

It is better to restore a bridge of

historical import than tear it down.

There's also of course ,the additional cost of building a new one.

I have a strong belief in historic preservation and a loathing for politicians who spend the taxpayers money for political purposes.

I have posted my own response here several times and it does not appear, despite my verifying it as change.org requires. I do not understand why. I am a Pond Eddy, PA resident of 20+ years, need this bridge on a daily basis to get home and most certainly have a right to have my voice heard. I do not know if our moderator is deleting it or what is going on here.

NOT ONE of you signers is a resident that NEEDS this bridge to live. For the 20+ years I've lived in Pond Eddy, PA. We've had NO fire, ambulance, or other essential services. Fixing this bridge has been studied for years. It's beyond "fixing". We had a small fire last year and good thing it was small as we have ZERO fire services over here. We carry heating oil in plastic containers in our CARS on YOUR roads as delivery trucks can't make it. Super dangerous. Let progress happen, or ride your own self around behind a horse in a buggy.
