When the Mt. Umunhum Radar Tower in South San Francisco was being considered for removal, local historian and activist Basim Jaber started a petition to save it. The 2,135 supporters of the petition helped to convince the local board to keep the tower intact for five years while money is raised to save it. Jaber wrote, "Keeping this topic in the public eye was the key. We needed to generate a lot of public attention and support and the end result is that we avoided the wrecking ball. Even if it's just for 5 years, we prevailed in saving it. Now the fund-raising campaigns and partnership-seeking efforts begin. It's not a lot of funding to raise and we have 5 years to do it."

The Open Space District Board of Directors recently approved a project plan to tear down ALL buildings on the site except the main radar tower which is the topic of debate and discussion.  A decision will be made on the Radar Tower on Wednesday, October 17th.  (See below for "Next Meeting" details)

Now is the time to be vocal about saving this historical landmark and South Bay icon.  To start, please sign this petition.  You can also write more detailed letters to the Open Space District Board of Directors if you'd like:

It is important to attend the public meeting workshops and be vocal there as well.  The Board of Directors wants to hear your opinion.  For more information about upcoming public meetings, visit the Open Space District web site.

My husband and I have lived in Almaden for 40 years. We love looking at the tower as a landmark and also for the historic significance it has. It would be tragic to tear it down and lose that history that has been such a part of this area. The tower needs to be saved. Please incorporate it into the open space plan and recognize it for the historical past that was so important.

I was born in Almaden and have moved back as an adult. We went up to the top with my girl scout troup in the 1970's. It is so unique, and represents our shared history as well as my personal history. I would never want to see it removed and look forward to being able to go to the top. PLEASE DON'T REMOVE IT!!!

Why do we have to keep tearing down historic and memories, for the sake of non-progress. What are going to do sell the land to a developer under the citizens of San Jose's knowlege and sell really expensive homes. This landmark is the least of our problems, let's put our money in projects that will benefit the masses.

I think it is of historical value and I also value it as a landmark. Wherever I am in the South Bay, I can instantly identify Mt. Um by it!

The Sierra Azul/Umunhum area is a remarkable and fascinating historical landmark and I want to run and hike the mountain!
