Your signature on this petition is a vote to support the creative cooperation of our city's citizens and to preserve Milwaukee's history.

The members of the Milwaukee Common Council have the opportunity to vote on July 6, 2012 to enforce a Temporary Historic Designation for the Sydney Hih building. This designation would prevent the building from being demolished for at least 180 days. There is already a group of citizens, developers, and private donors ready to step forward to create a working group and develop a full-fledged redevelopment plan for the buildings during this timeframe. What we need is time. Your signature on this petition will give us that time.

If you do not sign this petition, the members of the Common Council will interpret that silence as proof that Milwaukee's history is not important to us. The building will be torn down without a development plan and in all likelihood will sit vacant like the rest of the Park East Corridor which has lingered in this state for more than a decade.

Vacant lots do not attract development. Beautiful, unique buildings and engaged citizens do! Vote to Save Sydney Hih. It's one button. It's worth it.

Thank you all for your signatures and comments! Over 150 signatures this morning alone! To update - this morning the Common Council voted to stay the demolition for at least a couple of additional weeks. (See attached article.) We will continue to work behind the scenes, but we still need your help! There are 600,000 people in Milwaukee and we need to see these already great numbers explode. Please pass this on!

This is about more than just this one building. There is a push in cities across the country to dismantle the kind of protections historic preservation commissions have put in place to safeguard our nation's historic buildings. While these protections can be challenging, they are imperative. When we talk about fundamentally altering the face of our cities in the name of progress, we need to pause and talk collectively about what that really means. These protections afford us that opportunity.

Sydney Hih was a milestone in my music career in 1992. Gus was my first critic, and his words still rattle in my head as I play the states and all over Europe. And again in mid 00's was a haven for affordable/accessible art space. I will never forget the buildings, their characters and their benevolent ghosts.

Do we really need another "new" building? Certainly no new empty condos.

You only need to travel to any world class city to understand the need to preserve the past with the future. Sydney Hih is in a unique position to anchor the past with the future.
