To update - this morning the Common Council voted to stay the demolition for at least a couple of additional weeks. (See attached article.) This is about more than just this one building. There is a push in cities across the country to dismantle the kind of protections historic preservation commissions have put in place to safeguard our nation's historic buildings. While these protections can be challenging, they are imperative. When we talk about fundamentally altering the face of our cities in the name of progress, we need to pause and talk collectively about what that really means. These protections afford us that opportunity.
