Save Cyclists' and Pedestrians' Lives!

      Toronto, Canada

On a recent trip to Manhattan, we saw many trucks with sideguards to protect the population of pedestrians and cyclists. How embarassing to find that the Canadian government is failing their citizens by not making sideguards mandatory here.

November 7th will mark one year since Jenna Morrison, a 38 year old mother was killed when a truck clipped her bicycle and she fell under the wheels. Instead of nursing her would be 4 month old baby and enjoying summer with her 6 year old, she is gone.

Sideguards prevent pedestrians and cyclists from falling under the tires of trucks by bouncing them away from the truck instead of under.

My husband Ulrich Hartmann might still be alive if trucks had these sideguards. Ulrich was hit by a cement truck on September 11, 2006. This amazing man was taken from me and our two young children.

Sideguards will save lives. They are mandatory by law in the UK and some European countries already. Please sign this petition and ask your friends and contacts to do the same. The Honourable Denis Lebel ( is the Minister.

Dr Dan Cass and his team at Ontario's Coroner's office released a report on Monday, which studied cyclist fatalities from 2006-2010. In it are 14 recommendations including making sideguards mandatory in Canada! Minister Lebel (Federal Transport Minister) and Minister Chiarelli (Ontario Transport Minister) need to feel the weight of this report and take action to keep vulnerable road users (including pedestrians) safe!

    3. Save the date! June 2nd Ontario Wide Cycling and Pedestrian Rally

      Hi everyone,
Our group called Safetrucks, which came together out of a need for safer streets for all it's users particularly targeting the need for sideguards on trucks to protect cyclists and pedestrians from falling under them, is participating in this event to help raise awareness of the sideguard issue. With growing concern for vulnerable users of our roads, it is imperative that we keep pushing the government into accepting the evidence that sideguards save lives. We must insist in the adoption of Bill C-344 which has been introduced to the House of Commons by Olivia Chow, and pass it as law.

    5. On February 22, 2012 there will be a Town Hall Meeting

      Karen Hartmann
      Petition Organizer

This meeting will be an opportunity to further discuss the impact (pun not intended) of not having mandatory sideguards. The families of Jenna Morrison, Ulrich Hartmann and Ryan Carriere will be speaking about our tragic losses. We will be planning a bicycle ride with cities across the country to raise awareness of the need for mandatory sideguards. The government needs to hear that studies in Europe and the UK have supported sideguard use and the benefits include safety as well as making trucks more aerodynamic and reduce fuel consumption. Sideguards have been mandatory in Europe for decades. Lets make it happen here.

    6. We are only 10 signatures away from 500!

Thanks to all who've signed this petition. We are so close to 500 names. Please send this on to your friends and contacts. Have a look at our website for more information regarding the studies supporting sideguards where cycling fatalities were reduced by 50% after the mandate was fully implemented!

We are gaining momentum. There are many family and friends of people who have lost lives in accidents with trucks. This change is needed. On February 22 we are having a 'Town Hall' meeting to plan further steps to have sideguards mandated in Canada. The venue is Biet Zatoon, 612 Markham St. Across from Bathurst Subway Station. Starting at 7pm.

    8. Nfld will be replacing their snow plows with trucks fitted with sideguards!

City councillors have also introduced this in Toronto. This initiative is doable! Whether on the federal, provincial or municipal level we can all agree that Canadian cyclists and pedestrians (and motorcyclists) lives should be protected.

Please let our voices work together to let the government know that the trucking industry must correct their stance and MUST have mandatory guide rails on all trucks. Let's make sure that no more children lose a parent needlessly!

Sideguards are a no-brainer: A familiar sight back home in Germany since 1991 (new registrations) and 1995 (retrofitting deadline for older trucks). Sideguards do not only protect pedestrians and (motor)cyclists, they are to alleviate heavier accidents with cars as well. The retrofitting cost is small and quickly amortized through improved aerodynamics. There are closed options that provide additional space for advertising and visibility in bad weather is said to improve due to less water being sprayed out from underneath the truck.

It seems like a no-brainer to implement this standard. I am a cyclist and I care for my own safety and the safety of others.
