Save Bhagirathi Ganga/ River Ganges

Pained by the unrelenting destruction of the Ganga river and the government’s continuing apathy, Dr G.D. Agrawal, India's pre-eminent environmental quality scientist and a former Professor (and HoD) of Civil & Environmental Engineering at IIT-Kanpur is on a fast-unto-death, living on water for a month (from February 8 to March 8), and left even water on March 9, 2012. Three prominent members of the National Ganga River Basin Authority (NGBRA) resigned on March 10, citing the PM’s complete lack of interest and inability to save River Ganga.  Scientist-turned-seer Swami Gyan Swarup Sanand, earlier known as Prof G D Agrawal, stopped drinking water from Friday demanding action to save the Ganga. The district administration admitted him to Varanasi's S P G Divisional Hospital Sunday morning after his health deteriorated.  He is in a precarious state of health, but so far the government is unmoved.

River Bhagirathi Ganga (also known as Ganges) has a very special place in Indian culture, thought and tradition. In the past few years, however, the continuity, quantity, quality and regime of flows is being disrupted for generation of hydro-electricity.Already in the reach downstream of Maneri, long stretches of Bhagirathi remain water less for long periods. If the construction of dams upstream of Uttarkashi is not stopped, the river itself may disappear. Ganga is also currently one of the five most polluted rivers of the world, but dumping of industrial wastes and sewage continues unabated.

Let us give a strong message to the government to urge them into action. This is a threat to not only the environment of the whole Ganga basin, but also to the religious and cultural roots of India. Let us urge the government to accept the demands of Dr Agrawal and save his life before it is too late.

      Dear friends,

I am happy to inform you that our efforts have borne fruit. Environment scientist-activist G D Agrawal broke his 68 day fast on March 23rd, after the government promised to convene the meeting of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh-led National Ganga River Basin Authority (NGRBA) next month.

I thank you, all 3088 of you who have signed the petition so far. However, the fight is not over yet. This is the third time Dr. Agrawal has fasted in the past 4 years, each time with the same simple demand - to stop the construction of dams on the Ganga, and to clean it up. Each time the govt has made similar promises, but with no concrete results so far.

So lets keep the momentum going, and keep the pressure on the govt. It is hard to ignore 3000+ voices when they are united for a cause.

      Thanks for your continuing support,

      Alpana Agarwal
