From Petition Creator Brenda Cyr: "Superintendent Thompson contacted me February 4th and stated that eliminating band and orchestra will not be part of the budget savings plan that he is presenting to the Board on February 8th. Regardless, this petition will be presented to the Board so that your voices are heard and remembered. Thank you for your support."

Elementary students enjoy band and orchestra. The program provides a creative outlet in addition to teaching students how to read music and play an instrument. It fosters a sense of community among band mates and cooperation to perform as a group. Band and orchestra challenge a student to be disciplined and dedicated - qualities much needed for a child to succeed in today's competitive social and school environments.

District 15 removes band and orchestra from list of possible budget reductions

At the Community Consolidated School District 15 Board of Education meeting on Wednesday, February 8, the administration will be making recommendations on cost reduction measures to address the District’s projected $9.6 million structural deficit for the 2012-13 school year.

Previously, the District administration had shared a draft list of ideas that included reductions to elementary band and orchestra. After receiving feedback at various constituent group forums, the administration has determined that the final proposal it will present to the Board will not include reductions to band and orchestra.

I encourage folks to attend who want to learn about what recommendations the district has that could affect students. I also recommend, if possible, that you attend your school's PTA meetings. Questions can and should be asked so you can learn about what's going on in your child's school. Thank you again for your support

As I helped my son practice his trombone for band, I was reminded just how much is doing for him. He and I were laughing, talking about music and notes, creating songs...it was a nice parent/child moment. I hope that all students in District 15 can continue to have the choice to participate in band/orchestra!

"Thank you for your words in support of the band and orchestra programs. We will certainly consider them when we create a reduction plan to share with the Board of Education. I, too, am a strong advocate for the arts. It would be a shame if finances dictated the need to cut some or all of these programs." ~ Superintendent Thompson

Instrumental music fosters creativity and a sense of community, and it is difficult for a student to obtain this type of participation in the arts outside of school.

Having band in my life in elementary school, junior high, and high school gave me more social opportunities and gave me a place to fit in for someone who was considered "different." I will always look on my time in band with fondness.

Music is beautiful and everyone deserves an opportunity to try it out. Many can't afford private tutors, therefore school programs are the only option. Removing band and orchestra would take away this wonderful opportunity, hindering children's access to the arts.

I remember the first time I held a violin. I instantly knew that I was meant to play it. Being a part of orchestra was a great experience for me. I was able to put whatever emotions I was feeling into my music. Orchestra showed me to not be afraid of going outside of my comfort zone and I met who is now one of my best friends during the process. It's great to see how the orchestra program is finally starting to grow at Palatine High School. We had about 25 musicians my freshman year and we now have 50! We might even be able to have two orchestras next year! Even though I'm a senior and I will be leaving the orchestra program forever, it would be great to come to one of the concert's next year to see an even bigger orchestra program. If they cut the music program in District 15 this could definitely be the downfall of the orchestra program not at just Palatine High School, but all District 211.
