San Antonio Independent School District

Uphold historic preservation in San Antonio

    1. Petition by

      Ferne Burney

We do not want to witness the destruction of landmark facilities within the city and within the school district. We want to see the emphasis to be placed on the education of our children, completion of academic programs, and improved graduation rates.

The SAISD Board of Trustees is charged with improving education and preparing young people for productive work or further learning, not with the promotion of professional sports facilities. I no longer trust the current Board to act in the best interest of our students; its lack of transparency and its proposals violating community desires are shameful.

I was stunned by the initial disregard of the neighbors near the stadium and citizens. Hopefully, this petition will make it very clear that people are very concerned and will be watching.

It is time to retake our schools. What the SAISD School Board members did was wrong! They need to focus on the children and the children's education ---not self interests or special interests. They blatantly disregarded the recommendations and advise of the experts, the Citizen's Advisory Committee, the Head of the Athletic Department, the Superintendent and the many many tax payers and people who pleaded to do what is right and vote for Option 3. When there was public uproar by the people and the media, they said that they would table any discussions with the Spurs, Sports and entertainment. Well, they have deceived the people before, when they made a similar statement to get the Bond passed, just to take it off the shelf when they thought the sentiment subsided. Let us demonstrate with our signature that the School Board was elected to serve the children and the tax payers, and that our voices NEED TO BE HEARD! United in this cause, we will prevail, and demonstrate that we will take back our schools and put the focus and attention back on the children --where it needs to be, Thank you... Dr. Gloria G. Within the City and SAISD Board there seems to be a feeling that they can "sell" the voters on a specific bond project and then change it to meet their own desires after the fact without any voter input. The behind the scenes political games evidenced with the Alamo Stadium bond monies (and other city bond projects) are in direct violation of our trust and the Board should go back to the original design that the COC, public, their staff and directors supported. We should NOT allow the monies to be diverted to unnecessary modification of the stadium and not support any additional bond monies until oversight committees are given power to protect citizen interests and concerns.

It is offensive to retool the landmark Alamo Stadium with a FIFA width soccer field that takes out the existing track and invades the historic fabric when a University Interscholastic League football & soccer field that takes care of student needs can be developed within the exisitng dimensions of the facility..
