Sam Houston Area Council: Reject the Boy Scouts of America's anti-gay policy

      Houston, TX

We, the Scouts and community members of Houston, TX urge the Sam Houston Area Council to reject the Boy Scouts of America's anti-gay policy.

"A Boy Scout is Kind... He treats others as he wants to be treated. He does not hurt..."

"A Boy Scout is Helpful... A Scout is concerned about other people. "

"A Boy Scout is Friendly... A Scout is a friend to all. He is a brother to other Scouts. He seeks to understand others. He respects those with ideas and customs other than his own."

A Boy Scout is Brave... He has the courage to stand for what he thinks is right even if others laugh at or threaten him."

Among service organizations, the Boy Scouts are increasingly isolating themselves with their discriminatory policy. Organizations including the Girl Scouts, the Boys & Girls Clubs of America, as well as the 4H Club all welcome gay kids as well as adult leaders.

We love the Boy Scouts, but we can’t support this policy. That's why we urge you to speak out against the ban on gay Scouts and leaders and adopt an inclusive policy like other troops, packs, councils, and lodges across the country have done -- so the Boy Scouts can maintain its relevancy, improve recruitment, and truly live by the principles it teaches its members.

Discrimination of any sort should not be tolerated.

Although it has not been my position in the past, as an Eagle Scout, a Venturing Silver award recipient, a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and a straight man, I now feel that as an organization, we - the Boy Scouts of America - should admit homosexual youth to participate fully in the Scouting program. The idea that boys will be less safe or will somehow suddenly turn gay because their fellow youth in the program are is unsubstantiated by data.

Scouting prepares boys to become leaders. THe curent don't ask/don't tell policy is overtly discriminatory. It is contrary to the foundation of principles of scouting. It sends the wrong message to boys. Intolerance should not be tolerated. If the US military can evolve with the time and to allow openly gay citizens serve our country, why can't scouts do the same.

I'm an ASM, my husband is Advancements Coordinator, and we have a Star Scout and a Second Class Scout. The anti-gay policy conflicts with the BSA's vision and mission statements and with the Scout Law and Oath. Do the right thing, BSA -- own up to your wrongdoing and overturn this deleterious policy. Membership should be based on character and nothing else.

Don't continue to sully the reputation and moral highground of BSA. This has gone on too long.
