SACRAMENTO BEE: Marriage rights activists are stepping up their pressure on Mayor Kevin Johnson to join dozens of other elected officials in supporting gay marriage. Supporters of gay marriage were expected to drop off 338 signatures this morning at City Hall urging Johnson to join the Mayors for the Freedom to Marry. Johnson said last week he would read the pledge, but hadn't made up his mind on whether to sign it.

"Sacramento is one of the most diverse cities in America and a city like ours needs leaders willing to stand up for all of us," Sam Catalano, president of the Stonewall Democrats, said in a statement. "Supporting marriage equality helps make our city stronger both socially and economically. We are all exceptionally hopeful that Mayor Kevin Johnson stands on the right side of history and we eagerly await his response."

THE SACRAMENTO PRESS: Marriage rights activists will deliver a petition asking Mayor Kevin Johnson to join other mayors in support of same-sex marriage Tuesday morning at City Hall in a move they said they hope will cause him to consider endorsing Mayors for the Freedom to Marry.

“We’re not trying to force anybody’s hand or be aggressive in any way,” said Neil Pople, communications director for the Stonewall Democratic Club of Greater Sacramento and author of the petition. It has more than 300 signatures and is posted here. “We want to positively encourage the mayor and let him know that there are people who want this to happen.”

SACBEE: Following a federal appeals court ruling today that California's same-sex marriage ban is unconstitutional, Mayor Kevin Johnson said he would look at a petition signed by dozens of statewide politicians that promotes marriage equality.

While the mayor said he "certainly respects" the court's decision today, he repeated his personal belief that "marriage is between a man and a woman." But, he added, "I strongly oppose discrimination when it comes to our constitution."

Johnson has been urged by the Stonewall Democrats club to join the Mayors for the Freedom to Marry, "a bipartisan coalition of over 100 United States mayors dedicated to promoting marriage equality in their communities, state, and our nation." Johnson told reporters this morning he would now look at the group's petition and consider signing it.

As of this morning, we've hit 206 total signatures, only 44 away from our original goal! Please take the time to post on your facebook, twitter, myspace or other social networks-- it is extremely critical that we get enough names attached to this before taking it to Mayor Johnson.

We've been fortunate enough to have some local elected officials sign on, including Sacramento County Supervisor Phil Serna, Sacramento City Council Member Kevin McCarty, and SMUD Board Member Genevieve Shiroma-- all members of Stonewall and long-time champions for equality. We have also been joined by Equality Action Now and Marriage Equality USA in our quest to get Mayor Kevin Johnson on the right side of history.

Keep up the good work, folks, the finish line is just up ahead!

We've topped 100 signatures for this petition! Great work gang, but we've got a few more to go before we can take this to Mayor Johnson. Please send this out to your friends and co-workers, neighbors, enemies and families... the more people who sign the bigger the impact.

We really appreciate all the positive feedback and hard work you've already shown. Let's help Mayor Johnson get on the right side of history!

Signing this petition is simply the right thing to do. I urge the mayor to join the governors of New York, Maryland, California, and Washington and the Episcopal, Presbyterian, Evangelical Lutheran, and Congregational UCC churches in supporting the right of same-sex couples to marry and build a family.

I feel our mayor deserves to see the importance of this issue to the living, breathing, human beings he was elected to represent. we only have one life, we have to fight for our rights while we still can.
