BHASVIC Field is a playing field situated between Brighton and Hove Sixth Form College (BHASVIC) and Cardinal Newman Catholic School. It is the playing field and open green space for over 4000 school children and students at three schools, and is used by local community groups and residents for formal and informal sports and recreation.
It has just been announced that the field has been identified by Central Government (Education Funding Agency) as the proposed permanent site of the King's School (a Church of England Free School for pupils aged 11-18).
There is strong opposition in the local community against the plan to build on the playing field. The Field is vital for school sports and curriculum use, and serves as an important green space for the local community. The Field is located in the centre of the city where there is a deficit of green space. There is no way of replacing this playing field or creating more green space.
We are calling on Education Funding Agency to drop the proposal to site the King's School on the field, and are asking them to look again at the brown field sites available.
