Remove Transgender from the DSM-5

      Arlington, TX

The DSM is regarded as the medical and social definition of mental disorder throughout North America and strongly influences international psychiatric nomenclature.

On January 10th, 2010, the American Psychiatric Association released proposed draft revisions for the Fifth Edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) to be pulished 2013.
Transgender people's civil rights advancement has been severely limited by our diagnosis in DSM because we are considered mentally ill by the American Psychiatric Association.

Although the propose changes for the DSM-5 has substituted "Incongruent" a less offensive word for "Dysphoria", the ramifications from this diagnosis still exists as illustrated recently by our exclusion from the DADT repeal.

Anti transgender organizations cornerstone evidence for our dehumanization is the DSM which links our identities with with autogynephilia and pedophilia.

We will never seriously be considered 'normal' enough for inclusion in meanngfull human rights legislation untill we are removed from the DSM, a fact the gay community realized and acted on thirty years ago.

Our diverse gender identities are a natural gift, not a psychiatric disorder.

When signed a email will automaticly be sent to the APA .

AP: "The board of trustees for the American Psychiatric Association voted Saturday in suburban Washington, D.C., on scores of revisions that have been in the works for several years. Details will come next May when the group's fifth diagnostic manual is published. "

"The trustees made the final decision on what proposals made the cut; recommendations came from experts in several task force groups assigned to evaluate different mental illnesses."

"-- Eliminating the term "gender identity disorder."

The article goes on to claim this change equates to the removal of homosexuality from the DSM. I strongly Disagree. This is not removal, it is simply substituting one D word for another.

    2. APA BOT Releases Report on GID Treatment Recommendations

The report is encouraging in that the Board of Trusties recognized that there are serious flaws in the DSM. But its discouraging that in the Abstract they acknowledge that the terminology used previously in the DSM has serious consequences negatively affecting our community and that their solution is to dress it up differently while essentially going about business as usual pathologizing us.

The study also concludes in the first paragraph that the APA lacks conclusive empirical data for the recommendation but will proceed anyways. That indifferent self righteous is exactly what has got the discredited in the past and is the basis for objections from numerous other pathologized groups and those therapists who treat us day to day.

I do find hope the Appendix 1: Other APA Policy Concerns Regarding GV. It addresses the need for the APA to develop written policy supportive of transgender.

    3. Make it Illegal for Healthcare Providers to Deny Care to LGBT Population

      kelli Busey
      Petition Organizer

This petition was begun by Karen S. Jones, RN, BSN, a member of the LGBT community. She has observed by practical experience the disparity, inadequacy and unavailability of medical service for the LGBT community and specifically transgender people.
I urge all to sign her petition as well.

    5. DSM-5: What's In, What's Out

      kelli Busey

Its a "hot Topic" issue because of petitions like this that are educating the world to the true nature of our naturally occurring social beneficial gender diversity. However pathologization means the same however you sugar coat it. This petition remains pertinent.

"Gender identity disorder. Individuals who believe their biological
gender doesn't match their gender identification will no longer be
labeled with a disorder. Instead, if they seek psychiatric treatment,
they can be labeled with "gender dysphoria."

"The workgroup responsible for dealing with the hot-button issue
considered a variety of other approaches, addressed later in this
article. Ultimately they settled on a formal diagnosis -- potentially
qualifying a patient for insurance-paid treatment if they want it --
but with a less pejorative name than "disorder."

    6. Diagnosing the D.S.M.

      kelli Busey
      Petition Organizer

I was heavily involved in the third and fourth editions of the manual but have reluctantly concluded that the association should lose its nearly century-old monopoly on defining mental illness. Times have changed, the role of psychiatric diagnosis has changed, and the association has changed. It is no longer capable of being sole fiduciary of a task that has become so consequential to public health and public policy.

    8. Shunning Medical Hoops, Transgender Patients Turn to ‘Informed Consent’

      kelli Busey
      Petition Organizer

The AMA begins its definition of informed consent as being "... more than simply getting a patient to sign a written consent form."
"It is a process of communication between a patient and physician that results in the patent's authorization or agreement to undergo a specific medical intervention."
This Campus Progress article suggests instead of the clinical gate-keeping method of admitting a person is a transsexual, which the APA now uses, we simply use informed consent to begin the process of transition.
      Informed consent verse pathologization.
PATHOLOGIZE: to view or characterize as medically or psychologically abnormal.

One interview to obtain informed consent to begin transition as opposed to the unbearably long and quite often frustratingly unyielding process of vetting unknowledgeable therapists who never had a clue about transsexualism or any inclination to recommend hormone replacement in the first place. Gone would be the fallacy being forced to live a 'real life test

    9. APA is being Criticized by American Counseling Association (ACA)

      kelli Busey
      Petition Organizer

There are serious flaws to the methodology being used by the APA in preparing the DSM-5. Flaws that in our case could contribute to missed opportunities for diagnosis, misdiagnosis and continued pathologization.
The accusations are being presented by the ACA which represents fully 20% of the psychiatry profession and are the ones who will ultimately decide whether to adhere to the DSM-5. As we all know too well most of have successfully transitioned in spite of the DSM, not because of it.
I have contacted the Psychiatric Times and have asked to accept there invitation to contribute a article regarding our concerns.
Please follow the link the the Psychiatric Times article. The conversation has just started!

    10. Obstetricians and gynecologists (ob-gyns) Are Now Transgender Welcoming

      kelli Busey
      Petition Organizer

"Obstetricians and gynecologists (ob-gyns) should be prepared to offer transgender patients routine screening and treatment, according to The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (The College)."
Although the official statement validates its position medically by referencing DSM-5 transgender and transsexual pathologization this is a step forward. However, the article makes no mention of HRT.\ which is troubling since many receive this medication although there has been no medical trials for establishing what the long term effects are.

Being of an objective, abstract mind, despite being a devout Christian...transgenders undergo years of psychological analysis already before being operated on. I feel if it is untreatable and harming nobody else, leave it alone.

I believe in equal rights. When i first was forced to come out by my mother. Everyone but my brother thought i could be cured or fixed. There is no cure and nothing to fix, we are who we are. And for transgendered people to be called mentally ill, i feel is the same as calling myself mentally ill because im gay, when really were not.

This is important to me, because equality is important to me. We're not moving forward if we're placing transgender/transexuals in the DSM as a psychiatric disorder... Where's the equality in that?
