Red Alert System for Suicide Prevention

On Saturday, November 5th, at 10:22 PM, my friend posted this on Facebook:

"someone save me from myself..."

No one saw this post and Jen completed suicide by jumping from her apartment window.

Therefore I propose that all social networks introduce a system for flagging statements that approximate suicidal thoughts and/or feelings.

If someone posts anything that could be taken as a suicidal statement - all of their friends should be sent an immediate text and/or e-mail to alert them to the statement so that loved ones, friends, and family can act on their post - to try and save their life.

How often in the news do we hear about those that post on a social networking site before they complete or attempt suicide?

We should use the power of these social networks to help prevent these deaths from occurring.

Today - 12/13/2011, Facebook will be launching a new suicide prevention chat service aimed at getting those who post suicidal thoughts the help they need by engaging them with a suicide prevention specialist.

This is most certainly a step in the right direction. Hopefully the other social networking websites will see that they have a social and moral responsibility to try and prevent suicide however they can.

Because I have 2 boys and at times I worry when they are down , and if there is a moment where they feel life is bad they would consider taking their lives I would want to be alerted to help and or get help. Sometimes our younger friends and family make comments and posts and so many people respond with advice and happy thoughts, which is great, but having a family member to be able to put their arms around them and to let them know that it will get better and to be able to get help would be a blessing to so many.

Too many young people have grown up in this world where there are so many places to share information with others (via FB, twitter, etc). If there was a way to make this possible, by all means... please do
