Queensland State Government: Wind Turbines need 5km set back from properties

We, the residents of the Atherton Tablelands and surrounds, wish to draw to the attention of the House that there is no Statewide regulation to protect residents from the health, social and environmental impact of windfarms.

The uncertainty for both developers and communities has the potential to negatively impact the advancement of renewable energy wind projects across Queensland and the lack of regulation could result in a burden on the judicial system as communities and local governments try to resolve planning disputes through the courts.

We believe that the implementation of a minimum 5km buffer zone from the boundary of neighbouring properties will eliminate many disputes and allow the wind industry to advance in Queensland while giving necessary protection to residents.

We call on the Government to implement a 5km buffer zone to all windfarms in Queensland as a standard regulatory instrument.

It is important to me because I live close to the proposed Tolga site.I am concerned about noise, vibration and sleep disturbance.

We are living very close to wind turbines and we became ill - seriously ill!!! As long as wind turbines can't be banned completely, I hope 5 km are far enough.

I live within 1.6km of an industrial wind farm of 9x410ft turbines. This is a newly built development but already there is problems with shadow flicker. As yet there is no audible noise pollution in the town, but the closer you get to the turbines, then audible noise is an issue. As for Low Frequency Noise, it is too early to tell if this will create problems.

As for visual impacts, the turbines dominate the landscape and it is very hard to accept them, and I very much doubt that I will get used to them. The turbines are a blight on the landscape and can be seen from very far distances. Even if the turbines were located at 2km distance, they would still dominate over the town skyline.

Industrial wind turbines are heavy industry and need to be located in an appropriate area if you choose to build them (even though I disagree with the technology), a 5km setback is a step in the correct direction to protect residents from the negative impacts.
