Protect the Clean Water Act: Vote "NO" to HR 2018

      Lexington, United States

The Clean Water Cooperative Federalism Act, HR2018, would gut the Clean Water Act by giving the states, rather than the EPA, the ultimate decision-making authority over our nation’s water quality standards. Birth defects, as well as cancer and other diseases, occur at a much higher rate in states like KY, WV, VA, TN where water sources are polluted by MTR. Just as the EPA, lead by Lisa Jackson, is getting some bite to their bark, the House of Representatives has passed HR2018.

    1. Beshear's concern for King Coal misplaced

My friend, Stanley Sturgill -- retired coal miner / mine inspector and KY resident (so he knows a little something about coal mining), submitted this editorial letter and it was published yesterday. Last Friday, he and a large group of concerned citizens (many from Kentuckians For The Commonwealth and Cumberland Chapter Sierra Club) demonstrated outside one of our elected officials office.

U.S. Rep. Hal Rogers has held this office for 20 or 30 years-- and his district remains one of the poorest places in the USA. The residents are some of the sickliest in the Nation, thanks to all the toxins in the air, land and water. If King Coal really provided the miners and the community with good jobs, wouldn't Southeastern KY boast a better economy and residents would enjoy a higher standard of living?

Please read his letter and of course, ... PLEASE sign petition!!! ~ Karen 8)

Thank you so much for your support! Please continue sharing and recruiting people who understand we need a strong EPA to fight King Coal and Big Oil. They have so much money and power, but we each have a voice and a vote! Please take a look at Ohio Valley Environmental Coalition's website. Get all the latest news stories and educate yourself about MTR and the dangers of coal ash. They are fighting tirelessly for us all.

As you may know, the "waste" from MountainTop Removal surface mining is pushed over the mountainside into the valleys and streams. The "waste" includes the actual mountaintop-- dirt, rocks, trees, and homes of many birds and animals. I hate to invision how many creatures are blown to pieces when the explosives are detonated. The "bombs" leave behind toxic heavy metals and other chemicals, which also get dumped into the water. These poisons are killing Appalachians... the born and the unborn. It is unconscionable that the head of the WV Dept. of Environmental Protection cares more about profits than people.

Why is it, Americans refuse to accept the Environment is our life support? Nature is our Nurturer. We are all One Living Being, connecting and interacting, exchanging chemicals-- one beings waste is another beings nutrient. The Circle of Life is a complex cycle, dependent on the symbiotic relationships of ALL things that inhabit Earth. Poison any one part, kills us all.

    6. How would they run their companies with NO regulations?

      karen sterling
      Petition Organizer

With current laws and regulations in place, coal companies like Frasure Creek Mining and ICG repeatedly dump toxic waste and sludge into our water with impunity. The Governor and even the state Division of Environmental Protection side with coal.

The President gave us hope in 2008, when he said, "Let's be the generation that finally frees America from the tyranny of oil." His decision to halt the EPA's re-evaluation of air standards, left me wondering about the sincerity of his promises.

I am so pleased with your response. Since this is my very first petition, I am excited! The battle goes on. So does the push for the Keystone XL Pipeline...which would no doubt pollute waters all across America. Sign petitions against it.

Under the Clean Water Act, 20,000 violations in 2010 were brought against Frasure Creek Mining and ICG. The Ky Energy and Environmental Cabinet gave them a slap on the wrist and $660,000 in fines, which we think should be in the millions.

If a Congressman or woman doesn't get this, they should not be in Congress. People's health should matter more than someone's profit margin. How much has the government spent on cleaning up pollution? We need to protect the environment, so that we can continue to progress and build new industries and companies. Not poison our country and see all business but clean-up go to India and China.

Just say no to HR 2018!

I grew up in the coalfields of southwest Viriginia and I still have family and friends in the region. It is sad that the greed of the coal operators has been allowed to destroy the mountains, streams, hertiage, and health of the Applachian people. They are allowed to get away with this, and our goverment does nothing! These mountains are some of the most beautiful places on earth and now they are bening destroyed daily.

Republicans or democrats: YOUR duty and task is to serve the country and their people and this means: NO destruction, NO pollution BUT preservation and protection of everythin that is precious and important to live a safe and healthy life! When everything is polluted and destroyed, than even YOU can't do nothing any more, even when you have billions of dollars! Use your common sense NOW and not your stupid blindness, called greed!
