Marriage in the Australian Capital Territory should continue to refer to a man-woman union – its common law meaning, affirmed throughout Australia in the commonwealth Marriage Act 1961. Only man-woman unions have the potential to create the next generation with both male and female role models. Studies show that children are safest by far when raised by their two natural married parents.
The so-called ACT Marriage Equality Bill 2013, which purports to provide for “marriages between 2 adults”, would undermine the institution of marriage. It should be rejected.
